Recomendations for triple monitors.

Hey guys Im debating on which route to go and would like to keep futureproofing in mind.

Right now I want to run 3 monitors I just ordered. I have a GTX480 already but been debating on trying to sell it to buy a 6950 to flash it to a 6970 which sounds awesome and can run eyefinity. Next option which is more expensive but less hassle is get a second 480 but will require me to upgrade my PSU since I only have 600w.

I want to know what would be the safest best bang for my buck. Stability is definitely a high priority of course. Just recently started getting to know the computer scene so forgive my noobness .

Heres my system currently:
i5 760 @ 3.5ghz
G.Skillz 1600mhz 2x2gigs
MSI p55-g55 mb
H5O cooling with 3x120mm fans
GTX480 video card
600wPSU

It depends on what do you use your setup for, for gaming even the HD6950/HD6970 can't keep up with that resolution, you can get away with some games but for games that are a bit demanding then you probably need extra power to run.
It just comes down to you lose one thing over another between those 2 choices.
1. Eyefinity with a single AMD card sound great but you'll sacrifice the performance.
2. GTX 480 SLI gives you enough power to run those 3 monitors (assuming each is 1920x1080 or less) but it will cost more, consume more power therefore require a beefy PSU, not to mention the noise and all that.
Don't know what your budget is but you can always get a used GTX 480 for $250 or less plus a good PSU will run you around $150 or so to drive GTX 480 SLI, so that put you at $350 for the upgrade. Of course you won't lose any money to downgrade the GTX 480 to a HD6950 but once again, you'll see a performance hit when you run games on your eyefinity setup.

Thanks for a great response exactly what I was looking for. I got 3 1080p monitors and to be.honest.with how much the setup costs for an extra 300-400 bucks I rather.do it right. I play mainly FPS which is the whole reason for this setup. From my understanding I would need a 1000wPSU. The noise doesnt bother me as the tower is by my feet and I play with headphones.

No... two amd 6950s with unlocked shaders...the 2GB of vram in them will allow you to up the eye candy to the max with little or no loss to performance..

You would need to get a higher wattage PSU for it...but wont need to get to the 1000w watt range...a 750watt-800watt one(good quality one mind you) would do fine...

That's sounds alot more cost efficient. As the 1000w psu as so expensive as well the 480s are more too then the 6950.

Noob question but say if I bought one 6950 now n decided to upgrade later with more funds could I just put a second card but a 6970? Or is mixmatching not good?

Also read that some 6950s arnt flashable anymore, is this true?

the 6950 1GB versions arent UNLOCKABLE...I heard rumors at that they are laser cutting future versions to prevent unlocking of shaders...but not sure when that will happen(if it will)...

And the one thing i find beautiful on crossfire as compared to SLI, is you dont have to have the SAME card to crossfire with...you can mix and match as long as you in the same series...

For example..you can crossfire a 6850 with a 6870...cause they are in the same series... in the 5800 series...you can crossfire a 5830, with a 5850, 5870 or another 5830... they all are in the same family...

So you can crossfire a 6950 with a 6970 or even the 6990 when it comes out...

I think you've sold me on the 6950 lol.

So theres a high chance the 2gig 6950s are still unlockable?

Get the new PSU, Your going to need it anyway eventually. Buy the 2nd GTX480 on craigslist/Ebay. Your total upgrade shouldn't be more than $450 which will perform very well.

Honesty if you dont get something with 2GB of vram your going to screw yourself in the long run. 1GB of Vram is just not enough for eyefinity with high settings. Id say buy a 6950 2gb myself maybe add another later or just grab a 6970 2gb.
