it works for me because my electricity is included with rent.
I get that.. I pay a fixed rate, so this would not cost me anything more for electricity, I also have a spare computer that I use to google things and plug data drives into.

I'm sure i'm not the only one dying to know exactly what this is being used for, and by the time he's willing to tell us, everyone will have forgotten about this project, except maybe the people who are crunching numbers for him :/

Interesting, did you actually get a new card? or did you use the one you have at this current time? can you actually hear the fans speed increase due to heat? does your computer seem any slower in game? is there a time he usually uses it? or does the program automatically use the power of the GPU after lets say 10 minutes of the computer not being touched.

I don't want to do this, but I am interested to see what he is actually trying to do here and if it's legit legit legit, poeple should say so in Detail! help the guy out after all you get a half price card or your electricity bills for the card paid for!!

Its non ATI/AMD and does not support openCL, no

From what I gather his software is built to run on OpenCL which is not supported by Nvidia cards.

"J.R. Willett's Summary
I specialize in writing custom PC and web applications which support business processes. I have been through the product cycle from design to release to ongoing support four times for four major product lines.

Some highlights of my story:

* My flight planning software has been used to fly unmanned aircraft in diverse locations, from scanning for diamond deposits in the far north of Canada to atmospheric sampling over the Indian ocean.

* My digital oscilloscope and logic analyzer software has been used on engineering desks around the world to debug digital signals, view analog waves and frequencies, and even output previously captured signals.

* My automated sensor calibration software controls temperature, position, rotation rates, and pressure in five calibration chambers which calibrate the sensors inside aircraft instruments 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

* I was recently selected to lead and manage the development of a new product line, which I cannot discuss here as it has not been announced yet.

Yes, I am paying people to run video cards on my behalf for my distributed computing project. Nearly everyone initially assumes it is some kind of scam - by far my biggest hurdle is overcoming that perception. Some people say that they will run a card for me on a spare PC with no personal information on it (that's what I would do). I do occasionally get people who tell me they'll put my software on their primary PC with no questions asked. I worry about the latter type, but it's not my place to judge their decisions as long as my processing is getting done.

Even those who are willing to run the risk of installing my software have another hurdle to overcome. Everybody wants to know exactly what it is that I am up to before they devote their GPU cycles to it, but I am extremely paranoid about somebody stealing my ideas, so all I say is that it is related to cryptography, and it is not password cracking or anything illegal. Then they have to decide if they are willing to take my word for that.

I do want to correct the original title of this thread. After 8 months the 5770 or 5870 are "free" (electricity costs make it not really free unless you have free electricity), but at $45/month you'd only have $360 towards a $600 5970. If my project keeps going after that point, you might eventually get the full $600, but I'm not making any promises about running for that long.

I did consider buying PCs and video cards for this project (I did buy some, in fact), but I figured why should I buy PCs and pay for electricity when there are college kids in dorm rooms who pay a flat rate for room and board (and electricity), and who already have a PC that they want to get a new video card for? I can cut out the cost of the PC, cut out some or all of the electricity cost, and I can pay for the video card over several months rather than putting up a ton of cash upfront.

My other option was to rent Amazon GPU clusters. If my processing only went for a few hours or days, that would be the obvious choice. However, I need months of processing, and the final cost of renting from Amazon would have been at least an order of magnitude higher.

Obviously I have some hope that my project will eventually be worth some money, or I wouldn't be investing so heavily in the processing. I guess we'll see.

I'm happy to answer any questions you have on this thread, or at my gmail address: jr.willett

Thanks.
Interesting. You realize that OCN is contains one of the biggest groups of distributed-computing enthusiasts on the internet, yeah? On the assumption that this is legit, I'd hang around if I were you.
