There is no reason to use anything other than Avira. Avast is bloated. OhMahGod.......p2p protection...File System Shield...mail shield...web shield...IM shield...network shield. You'd think it would have the highest detection rate, but it doesn't.

MSE
Windows Firewall
Common sense

Shouldn't honestly need anything else.
Malwarebytes is good to have on hand for those paranoia moments.

I was an AVG user for many years, but the last few major versions have been way too bloated and annoying. I usually also had Ad-Aware, SpyBot, and sometimes Malwarebytes for those times when I just wanted to be sure.

On my new builds, I've been using MSE and Malwarebytes only, which seems to be what many recommend - glad to see I had the same thoughts, apparently!

I'm up and running solely on MSE with Windows 7 64-bit now. Hoping that's enough as I prefer to keep the bloatware as low as possible! Unfortunately for Windows, programs like these are a requirement. Thanks for your help everyone!

I'm in the same boat - new PC and curious about what to use. I'm most concerned about performance with AV. The Dec '10 final summary from http://www.av-comparatives.org/en/comparativesreviews/performance-tests ties Avast and MSE with a score of 179.

I was curious about Panda Cloud AV as it is suppose to offload all the work to the Cloud (their servers) but it didn't fair so well in these tests.

another vote for MSE, with malwarebytes. I don't know if it has been mentioned but Hitman pro which is payed works incredible.

I'm more partial to the VB100 personally.

I'd say Avira A/V + Comodo firewall if going the free route and Gdata or Eset if going the paid route, Eset being a bit lighter on the resources at the cost of a little detection rate.

Of course always have MWB handy.

I've used Eset for quite a while, but I might be going Gdata after my sub expires.
