Weird HDD problem..

Thread Starter
So I decided to move all my music, pictures, videos, and documents onto a seperate HDD, as I have about 150GB altogether of those file types.

Anyways I bought this HDD:http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822136770

Its a pretty solid HDD, and I am happy with it overall.

Problem is for some reason (this has happed twice so far) it just disappears off my computer, and I can no longer go into it, as it I unplugged it or took it out or something. A simple restart does the trick, but its a worrying problem, and I really would dislike having this becoming an ongoing problem.

I did a defrag, diskcleanup, and ran hdtune's health scan.. everything checks out okay on both HDD's... those are the only methods I can think of to test if an HDD is working okay and or "cleaning" it up.

Any help or information would be greatly appreciated! +rep to helpful posters!

Does the HD Tune S.M.A.R.T data have any warnings or errors?

Is the issue completely spontaneous? Or is it reproducable?

If you've got another machine you can use it in then I'd check that out too, but it sounds like RMA time to me otherwise

Try something simple first..plug a different pwr and data plug into the drive and see if that fixes it.

I use to have this issue like this as well. Mine was every time my computer would wake up from "sleep" mode. WIN7 seems to have a problem with it... It hasn't happened to me for awhile though!

Does yours happen randomly, or on wake-up?

try switching sata and power port first you might just have a bad port also try removing the device from hardware manager and reinstalling it. windows sometimes goofs on the initial driver installs for hdds and such. hope this helps

Well, the problem has only happened twice over a 3 day period. Ill switch cables ect..

Can't really report back until it happens again.

Definitely not going to RMA it, not worth the hassle.

Thanks for the posts. +rep
