Mixing Dual and Single Channel

I am currently running 4GB in dual channel mode. If I add just one stick on the other channel will it negate the dual channel mode for the original pair?

You can stick your controller into ganged mode and it will essentially act like a 128 bit bus instead of 2x 64 bit.

Fair enough. If the second pair is of a different speed and size, but a matched pair, will it work in dual or single channel?

Ok, what happens.. and it is both Intel and AMD. assuming you have a matched pair in the first memory bank. That bank will operate in dual channel mode. The bank that contains only one dimm will operate in single channel mode.

Both Intel and AMD addressed this issue some time ago. Although it didn't work in early socket 775 boards for Intel, it was changed sometime in the early years of 775. IIRC, AMD adressed it with what was to be the K9 series that never materialized, but the coding to address single DIMMs in conjunction with dual channel memory has been incorporated into all K10 chips (possibly some late K8's).

I think it will run on "flex mode"... part in dual and part in single channel...
1 channel with 1x2gb and let's say another channel with 1x2gb+1x2gb or something...

I'm currently using 1+2gb, 3gb in flex mode, on performance tests the result is quite close to a "pure" dual channel
