Yes, he could have dodged the attention and remained an anon, but that does absolutely nothing to address the actual legal issue of people's rights to tinker with products they own. For that issue to be addressed and a precedent to be set in the law, this court battle had to actually take place, and it just so happens that Hotz is that face.
Exactly what people don't understand. Eventually hackres get sick of being the anonymous person. Bunny set a huge precedent when he hacked the Xbox, but unfortunately MS didn't take action so nothing was set in law. This time it was with Sony and they decided to take legal action. Hopefully next time it will be understood that the hacker telling the company is better than him going underground and making a lot more damage.

He could have kept this underground, found all the keys, and made Sony's life a living hell. Not to mention it would have taken them twice a long to fix, because they wouldn't know how he was signing the package. You say that's preposterous but they also forgot to make R random.

Somebody has to take the fall, that's how this **** always goes down.

He broke the law. He exploited the OS and opened up a major security hole. How many times does it have to be said in these threads?

"HERPADERPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPP! HE'S TEH INNOCENTZ!!!" No.
Going to add something i forgot to comment on your earlier post as well. How are you attributing a jailbreak to cheaters. Plenty of people jailbreak their hardware yet do nothing malicious with it.

You might want to go educate yourself as to what a fallacy is

Geohot on his case: "Sony does not even try to allege piracy or copyright infringement in this case, they allege I did things like play “super mario world, an unauthorized game†on MY PS3. And access MY PS3 in an unauthorized way. Who are they to authorize what I do with my taxed and paid for property?
fail0verflow’s goal was even nobler than mine. They wanted to give you back a feature Sony illegally stole, Linux on your PS3. It’s shameful on Sony’s part that they are being sued at all. If you have a problem with pirates, sue them, don’t sue people who point out your shortcomings."

Think about it, what if AMD and INTEL purposely locked all their processors so you can't overclock it EVEN by 1mhz. What if GPU companies made sure there is no way to volt-mod your hardware basically forcing you to be stuck to the limits they have set? As a proud OVERCLOCK.net, I am disgusted how ignorant so many of you haters are about being the meaning of ownership of your own properties. I thought people on OCN of all places would understand since most of us overclock the crap out of our hardware in the "pursuit of performance" because we can do whatever we want to the things we PAID for.
Why would someone want to jail break a PS3? Oh yeah um well maybe for the simple fact they want to play un paid for games.. What else would be the point? Same goes for the iPhone. Why do people jail break it? Oh I don't know, maybe a little thing called Cydia? So it true for about 99 percent of all people out there. Granted there will be a very VERY small minority that want to do this to run say Linux, but for the most part it's to play pirated games. Plain and simple. Sony knows this.

NO!! I can't play a normal game of Mw2 Becuase he found the Mastercode to jailbreak the PS3. **** this guy

I've never used his stuff, but I'd help him. A Sony victory means a precedent that further erodes consumer rights. It is that simple.

Except that this suit has nothing to do with piracy (ask Sony). They're alleging "unauthorized use" and claiming "irreparable harm" from the distribution of the jailbreak software. They're just using the umbrella of the DMCA laws as a grounds for their charges.

Piracy is just a consequence of the jailbreak. Hotz has already come out and stated that he (and the fail0verflow team) were against piracy, and that they released the keys, etc., to open up a legitimate path to homebrew. Hotz himself never violated copyrights, never pirated any software and never manipulated/distributed hardware/software that wasn't his to begin with.

Whether or not people choose to use that path that he and the fail0verflow team created to pirate games is besides the point; the point is, that right to choose should lie with the individual, and not with Sony. If I paid for a PS3, I would expect to be able to choose what I wanted to do with MY console. If I start exploiting and affecting the experience of others negatively (like through PSN, etc.), THEN I could see Sony stepping in and taking actions to remedy the situation (like the bans, for example).

It's really no different than the case with pirating games on the PC. It's just a big deal because, again, consoles have always been seen as closed systems.

... You do realize that you PAY for apps on Cydia, right? Because, ah, I'm pretty sure mine's JailBroken so I have more control over the settings, can set text-tones to what I want, block calls and actually make use of my unlimited data plan with AT&T (that I also pay for).

So...

Fact check?

Never used anything made by him. If he is innocent then don't worry, he will win the court case and Sony will loose credibility.

Or is it one of these "he is innocent because I want him to be" things?

Just judging by the comments here (haven't really read much on this story, so take this with a grain of salt) but people that are saying 'he deserves it' and 'someone else will show up to replace him, so who cares' are just plain selfish. I'll bet those exact people are the ones who would complain if there actually was no one to replace him. Sure he seems like he was a bit of a douche, but he did things that I would assume most people here could never figure out.

I won't donate cause I don't use his stuff, so I CAN live without people like him, but to the people that jailbreak iphones and PS3's etc, you need people like him (skills wise, his personality isn't needed), so give him a dollar, better than nothing.

My 2 cents, not looking for an argument.
