There's always been some form of cheating in online games, be it lag-switches or 'standbying' or whatever incredibly pointless tool someone used to get another Rampage in Halo 2 or 3 or Reach or any other competitive game. It has always been dealt with in some form of banning and restrictive access. There's no reason this is any different, except that you have a clearer entry point for the 'cheaters,' apparently.

Regardless how much people 'hate' George Hotz either for who he is or what he did, you don't want him to lose this case. I can promise you that. In this country, people take freedoms so liberally that they don't even realize it, so I guess they're more willing than others to throw one away. What they don't realize is that in doing so, they are paving the way for corporate giants to legally have the ability to force and exert their influence and ideals further into your life - which I don't care who you are, you should not want this.
This. Even though the case is about Hotz, it's now bigger than Hotz. It's bigger than just the PS3, but you have to see the larger picture.

To all of you who "hate" cheating in the PS3, sorry to say but hating him and praising sony for winning this case won't get your "good times" back. There gone, cat's out of the bag, deal with it it's life. It's no different than the old 360 save file hacks, it'll get fixed eventually so quit whining.

I personally don't care about the cheating, I don't even see how it's relevant to this case. Yeah he allowed cheating (indirectly), but eventually sony will patch it so that modded PS3's will get banned/disconnected from PSN. MS did it, so quit whining.

However, the keys are moot as Sony should have just changed the R, oh wait they did! There is no way to downgrade 3.56 and no way to make a CFW from it because sony patched the hole.
Sony did not patch it. They can't. It's not something that simply can be changed.
What Sony did with 3.56 is that they ended up encrypting the already encrypted keys. Think of it as putting it in a box of another box.

According to Karakatos or w/e his name is - he can make it a CFW. It would just required alot of effort to crack but it's very possible. Last I checked on his twitter and blog, he said there is no need to although that might change because I believe Sony is pushing 3.56 without permission on alot of PS3s remotely.

Sony can't patch their signature keys. If they did - they would effectively break all pre-existing software including games (physical ones as well).

Quote:
From what I've gathered he didn't release anything until after they put the restraining order in. Or at least when they originally filed for it, then he put up mirrors (probably knowing they might take his software/stuff). However, I don't believe the original hack had any proprietary software used. I also believe his CFW was strictly 3.55, the others floating around were created after?
Yes his CFW and Karakatos' CFW was 3.55 - but he used Sony's key to create the CFW it's the only way of doing it. Therefore it's illegal.

Quote:
IMO I don't think his response to put it on public mirrors was appropriate but whatev. In that aspect somebody else would have found the keys and released the same software. I do think this whole case is basically Sony throwing a fit. They might get him on one of the 8 pending charges though, doubtfully the original charge.
But there's the problem. Just because someone else can do it doesn't mean they are invincible to the law. Anyone can rob a bank or kill a person, and when someone does - should their excuse be "anyone can do it?" No.

Quote:
[edit] IMO he should have put his effort to a loader instead of CFW/Keys. However I'm pretty sure somebody is going to figure out how to get a custom CFW to boot on a chip eventually, which is why I see this whole case pointless.
But you can't. You NEED those Sony signature keys to do anything. The CFWs are made out of those signature keys, and without them there are no "loaders". If that was the case, we'd have seen CFWs years ago. To do any of this "jailbreaking" or CFW or loaders or hacks or piracy or homebrew shenanigans - you need to use Sony's signature keys.

Screw this kid. No one asked him to make all his cracks public. He wanted the publicity, so he shall accept the consequences.

Don't assume he is poor either, do your research. He has been given everything in his life, don't donate just because Sony is suing him. Donate to people who actually need the money.

He could easily get a job working at Microsoft or Google if he wanted, but he doesnt. So do NOT feel sorry for this person.

He does not acknowledge this logic.
When he was jailbreaking the iPhone - somewhere around iOS 3's later revisions just before 4.0, he FLIPPED out on his blog about people constantly harassing him about the next jailbreak. He honestly acted as if he didn't expect this from all the publicity he had gotten over the past few years.
IT COMES WITH THE TERRITORY.
And you want to know what he did? He cried and "quit" the jailbreaking stuff. He said he wasn't going to jailbreak the iPhone more.
Several months later he "came back with a surprise" of course.

He doesn't deserve a dime.

Ahhh I was told they fixed R and made it Random again. lol I haven't read that far into it, don't own a PS3. Even if they make a CFW for 3.56 I've also been told you can't do any of the prior tricks. Apparently once you go to OFW 3.56 you can't downgrade, which is what I thought you needed to do to get a CFW on. Either way, if they can I guess they can. =P

As far as the loader, they now know how the original boot code runs. They could do what they've done for every other console, lift the boot code and use it to load what they want. Before they had the decrypted keys they couldn't do that, because you can't load something you can't decrypt. But that's a whole new bandwagon and a new project. However that would probably make more people angry as it would be an indefinite solution.

Some people are stubborn and won't listen no matter how hard you try to warn them. If they're willing to compromise so much for a few video games, I say let it crash and burn. Sure it will crash on us as well, but it will be the best "I told you so" ever.

Agreed, and well put!

I've been trying to preach this very same thing about 2-3 pages ago, but honestly, it seems that people are too ignorant to look past the, "ZOMG GEOHOT WANTS MONIEZ SCREW HIM LET HIM BURN CUZ HE'S A PUBLICITY WHORE LULZ!"

Losing this case to Sony will set many, many legal precedents that will negatively impact the way people/consumers interact with products like computers, consoles (and may overturn the legality of doing the very same thing Geohot did with his PS3 with our phones; i.e., jailbreaking/hacking mobiles phones would be deemed illegal as well) in the future and further blur the line between what we REALLY own with products that we fully paid for and what we can actually DO with said products.

You don't have to like the guy or even support him, but if you honestly say you want him to lose this case...well, that's akin to saying, "Yes please, i'd like more multinational corporations to further restrict and limit my rights as a consumer."

It defies logic how people living in a democracy would actually want to have less fair use/ownership rights, while at the same time wanting to broaden the scope of what constitutes "infringement/violation of the DMCA," (which seems to be ANYTHING these days).

This x 10000. This case is more about setting precedent than anything..

Oh don't get me wrong...i don't want sony to win! I'm just saying, some people need to be a little bit more responsible, and comprehend the consequences of releasing a hack.
