A lot of you Geohot haters really have no clue what this case is all about. If you knew how to read anything, then you'd understand that this case has nothing to do with piracy. Sony is suing the crap out of Geohot to scare people into never tinkering with the hardware you own.

Geohot on his case: "Sony does not even try to allege piracy or copyright infringement in this case, they allege I did things like play “super mario world, an unauthorized game” on MY PS3. And access MY PS3 in an unauthorized way. Who are they to authorize what I do with my taxed and paid for property?
fail0verflow’s goal was even nobler than mine. They wanted to give you back a feature Sony illegally stole, Linux on your PS3. It’s shameful on Sony’s part that they are being sued at all. If you have a problem with pirates, sue them, don’t sue people who point out your shortcomings."

Think about it, what if AMD and INTEL purposely locked all their processors so you can't overclock it EVEN by 1mhz. What if GPU companies made sure there is no way to volt-mod your hardware basically forcing you to be stuck to the limits they have set? As a proud OVERCLOCK.net, I am disgusted how ignorant so many of you haters are about being the meaning of ownership of your own properties. I thought people on OCN of all places would understand since most of us overclock the crap out of our hardware in the "pursuit of performance" because we can do whatever we want to the things we PAID for.

Hear hear!

You mirrored my thoughts exactly.

The precedent has already been set in the law when it comes to mobile phone OS's that makes jailbreaking/hacking our phones legal.

This case of SCEA vs Hotz has the chance to set the precedent regarding hacking on pretty much any closed system that we rightfully own.

While it is true that Geohot did play with fire, someone has to be the martyr/savior at some point.

I am all for manufacturers/companies locking down and implementing whatever security measures they want on their products at the factory, but once i've purchased it at the store (and paid the relevant taxes, etc.), I should be free to do whatever I damn please with the product I bought and now OWN.

That's essentially the idea that Sony wants to prevent here, and whether or not you like Geohot or his methods of fighting for this right, it's hard not to support him. There's a fine line between citing DMCA/infringement laws (none of which Geohot actually broke) and applying those same laws, generally used to govern virtual/intellectual goods, to physical products.

QFT

I don't like GEOHOT the person as much as the next guy but the outcome of this court case will have a great impact on the future modding/hacking scene of most electronics.

You got alot of good points i dont like geohot but sony is only doing this to try to scare people into not taking their consoles apart and modding them even if you do it for installing linux or just playing homebrew. Sony probly has some hiden agenda like selling users a code in that lets you install linux that makes them extra money.
