Folding with a solarpanel-powered PC?

Thread Starter
Not entirely sure if this idea is completely crazy or if its even possible?

I am looking at building a computer that runs completely from 240W solar panels. Is this possible? More to the point can I build a computer that will draw less than about 200W total? I am looking at having it run all day (when there is sunlight) and have it connected to a UPS so once the sun goes down the UPS kicks in and shuts down the computer safely.

Ofcouse I will need a 12v to 240v inverter. So there will be a small power loss there.

Any suggestions or comments?

Edit: Not sure if this is in the correct place. If it is wrong then can a mod please move to correct location. Sorry.

Your quad with onboard graphics at full load won't go past 200 watts. But if you add vga's folding into the mix forget that 200w mark.

First of all, are you using a battery bank? If so, you should do a 24 or 48V system to reduce losses in the inverter stage. If you're not planning on batteries, then get panels rated for 24 or 48V output for the same reason.

Definitely feasible, though you might want to double the input so you have some headroom for a few gpus. One or two GTS450 should be possible. From what i read they should pull about 120W each under load.

Higher is better

I'll be interested in how this turns out.

So go with 2x240W panels in parallel to double the amp output with out increasing the voltage. So 2x240W@24v will be ample?
