Anyone else want a lot higher GHz than tons of cores?

These days 6-core CPUs are not that shocking anymore and there are 8 and even 10 core CPUs on the horizon. And yes each of those next gen CPUs will also be faster clock for clock per core but...anyone else want to see breakthrough in nano-material that would allow a massive speed increase rather than having a CPU with tons of cores?

I understand that GHz is not everything. A 3GHz P4 core is way slower than a 3GHz 980X core. But I'm saying that all else being equal (aka same architecture, same clock for clock speed), with the way the current software are really not taking full advantage of all these cores (most games 1-2 cores, some up to 4). Also it seems to me that when you turn up the GHz (aka overclock) you will almost certainly see improvement (since the raw speed is higher) whereas if you just add alot of cores the software needs to be able to use that parallel processing hardware and may not mean higher improvement.

Wouldn't it be better to have say a 100GHz quad-core than something like a 5GHz 40-core for those of us gamers and non-power users who can't benefit from having a ton of cores?

I realize certain applications/environments today CAN use a high number of cores/procs. I'm talking about gamers and those who don't use software that won't benefit from a ton of cores.

What do you guys think?

I'd be happy with a 10GHz dual core...
well ok maybe a 100Ghz quad core would be nice wheee.gif
Who knows, maybe bulldozer might suprise us with 120Ghz hexa-core

Intel makes an I5-680 That is 3.6ghz.That is pretty high compared to everything else out there.I mean at least they have something to offer.There was a 3.8 p4 too.It would be great if they could release a 4.0 cpu though.

More core CPUs show their value only after years...(remember quad core is mainsteam today yet most games utilize two cores)

but you can benefit faster clock speed in today's applications.

One day computers will be so fast and small that they will become a standard and no need to customize them in their big flashy neon cases and this makes me sad frown.gif

They will just be a small white box with no cables because everything will be wireless (even power will be wireless)

You can build a huge supercomputer with 100,000+ cores that will be very fast at doing server/simulation-type programs but its useless in everyday applications and, like this 1000-core CPU, you probably need to specifically design the hardware/software to use that. So you can't just fire up any game/program and expect insane speeds. Also the article mentioned it's 20times faster, which isn't all that impressive when it has ONE THOUSAND cores. Basically each core is slow as hell but they just stuffed a ton of cores in it and made it pretty good at dividing up the workload.

Turn up a quad-core to 1000GHz and we'll see who is eating who for lunch wink.gif

Don't get me wrong though, if we actually start to utilize multi-core/parallel processing to a much higher extent and the programs/games run much faster I'm down with that too!

Not really. Because sooner or later the software will be created that uses more then 4 cores. But ignoring that.

I usually have about 5 or 6 applications open at one time. I usually set the cpu affinity so one app will use one or two core. The more cores I have the more apps I can run at the same time.

If I want to video encode, I can open 3 encoders. I can then set each encoder to 4 threads/2 cores. I lose about 10% efficiency with each encode, it takes about 10% longer. But I gain it back in the fact that I am encoding 3 videos at one time.

Once we start to see encoding for more then 2/4 core, we will want more cores over speed.

But of course, it really does depend on what you are using it for.

More speed is the easy answer, but you'd be giving a different answer if companies start writing every program in 64-bit multi-threaded format.
