Woah, what just happened?

Thread Starter
So, I'm running RAID 1 with two drives and while I was browsing the net, my computer froze for like a couple of seconds and then I got a message from my Intel® Matrix Storage Manager that apparently one of the drives disappeared. Now that I restarted, it found the second drive and is restoring RAID 1. But what happened? Why did a drive just randomly disappear? Is it going bad or something or did RAID controller itself somehow crash?

It could either be the drive or a bad driver, have you checked the intel storage manager drivers lately?
What's the drive health in HDTune?

Well this drive has done this before, once. It was practically the same thing when it just went missing and appeared again after restart. It's not wiring, since I double checked it and changed the sata cables to new ones. I guess drive's going bad.

I'll check it with HD tune once I have time.

Thank God I don't run a RAID 0 setup anymore, then I'd be screwed =D

Hmm, do sata port numbers matter? One drive's in a port 2 and another one in three.

No. Unless one is in the SATA 2.0 and the other in SATA 3.0

Looks like you had some kind of crash. Great to hear your RAID1 saved you

But it's eerie, isn't it? One minute drive's gone and then it's there again.

So, I checked what happened right before the drive went missing and in the log it says \\??\\C:\\Windows\\System32\\config\\COMPONENTS was damaged, so it was repaired.
And before that there was a message that \\Device\\Ide\\iaStor0 did not respond.

There is quite a few reasons how this could have happened.I'm going to guess power to the drive was interrupted for a moment.

Probably a bad sector being recovered and/or remapped that caused the drive to be dropped by the controller as it didn't respond quickly enough.

It happens, but can be a sign your drive is dying. Scan it with the manufacturer tools and RMA if necessary.

And if the drive is out of warranty and you can't return it, use SpinRite 6.0. It's an excellent tool for extending the life of a hard drive.
