best way to hook up a bunch of computers and play Civ 5

Thread Starter
A bunch of my buddies get together a lot and play Left 4 dead, Civ 5 and stuff like that; however, playing over the internet is a terrible option. What is the best way to set up a LAN not connected to the internet in order to play offline together. Sorry if this is a noob type question, none of us really know much about this topic.

All you need is an inexpensive switch or (if cables are too much of a hassle for you) a wireless AP.

a gigabit switch would be your best option, they cost 20-40 bucks and work out of the box.

Just a switch. Even 10 megabit is fine for gaming, although if you want to do LAN transfers go with Gigabit.

If you want to avoid the hassle of assigning static addresses as well as potentially providing wireless connectivity you can always hang a wireless router off of one of the switch ports (using one of the router's LAN ports) to hand out DHCP addresses. This would also work for WAN connectivity just so people can authenticate to steam, assuming you had the WAN port of the router connected to some type of cable/dsl modem.
