HD6950 Shader Unlock Gaming Comparison

Introduction:
Since the dawn of time, there has been discussion about how much effect the extra shaders have in games, and whether the more expensive HD6970 is worth it over the much cheaper HD6950. I too wondered this, considering I had unlocked the extra shaders before and not noticed much difference. So I decided to bench off the unlock against stock and overclocked to see how they compare in some of todays games.

Test System:
Intel Core i3-530 @ 4.2Ghz w/ HT
Gigabyte H55M-UD2H
Corsair XMS3 4GB @ 1600 9-9-9-24 2T
Radeon HD 6950 (Cata 11.1a)
Maxtor Sata 2 500GB (OS)
Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit

Games Tested:

Dirt 2 [In Game Bench Tool] Max Settings
Crysis [Guru 3D Bench Tool] -Very High, No AA
Batman: Arkham Asylum [In Game Bench Tool] Max Settings
Just Cause 2 [In Game Bench Tool] Max Settings - Desert SunRise
Crysis Warhead [FBWH Bench Tool] - Very High, No AA

Testing Methodology:
I ran these games at the highest possible settings because as with most other people will similar hardware, they would run the games at the highest (playable) settings they could, so it would be pointless to run on low or medium settings. All games were run at 1920x1080 resolution. Where FPS is zero, it is because the benchmark tool did not provide minimum fps results. Click the links for Crysis and Crysis Warhead as they were the only games that were not run at maximum Settings.Where FPS is zero, it is because the benchmark tool did not provide minimum fps results.

Conclusion:

Shader Unlock Percentage Increase over oced 6950
Dirt 2 - 4.8% Increase
Batman AA - 2.7% increase
Crysis Warhead - 2.71% increase
Crysis - 3.45% increase
Just Cause 2 -1.63% increase

800/1250 Oced to 880/1375 (6970 Clocks) Increase In Percentage
Dirt 2 - 7.2% Increase
Batman AA - 6.9% increase
Crysis Warhead - 10.4% increase
Crysis - 10.1% increase
Just Cause 2 -10.1% increase

So their you have it! It seems that just overclocking the 6950 to 6970 clocks gives a bigger performance increase than just unlocking the extra shaders. Hope this helps for those who were wondering how much of a difference the shader unlock really makes!

Thanks for reading and i appreciate any feedback.

Deja vu.. thinking.gif

Good work and effort. I would suggest (well i did):
1. Increase CPU speed (i know you can do that, why didn't you?)
2. AA maxed out when possible - More graphics load = better
3. Dark tower is the better test in Just Cause 2
4. Crysis Warhead bench is better than Crysis 1 bench from my experiance.

Good suggestions, will keep do those next time. Dont really do stuff like this often xD

Question since im new to overclocking GPUs in order to hit 880/1375 can this be done on stock voltage or no. I hate messing with voltage. Im the type of person who will only ever OC the MAX stock voltage can offer.

The 880/1375 clocks (6970 clocks) were done at 1.175v (which is also HD6970 stock voltage so its safe)

If you want help tweaking the voltage, lmk and will be glad to help you out ^^
