Do I need a new power supply?

Thread Starter
I am thinking about going Sli EVGA GTX 560Ti and switching to water cooling. So my question is if my current power supply will be big enough for a OC i5 to 4.0, 2 OC GTX 560Ti and a water cooling set up for CPU and 2 GPU. I'm using a Thermaltake Toughpower 850w W0131RU. It is getting close to 4 years old. Ill also have 1 DVD, 2 SSD, 1 HDD 1 Sound Card, G15/G9 Keyboard and Mouse and probably add a fan controller.

Yeah you should be fine with that power supply. 4 years somewhat long but I think you'll be fine. You might want to invest in a Kill-a-watt meter to see how much power you're actually pulling from the wall.

Btw, we're both Austinites.

Well, it's a Thermaltake, which is a bad point, but for dual 460s, you don't need over 650w. Your PSU will handle that just as happily as it will one of them.

I'd consider replacing it with something better at some point soon, it's an elderly thermaltake, and that's enough to warrant pondering a swap. No hurry, just keep an eye on Newegg for bargains on Antec TPNs or XFX's offerings.

The power supply you have now should suffice..however 4 years is quite a long time...gtx 560tiès require about 30 amps on the 12v rail..and if your going to oc then it may require more power...especially if its a 24 7 oc. I would consider investing in a more efficient psu like a corsair hx or ax 750 or 850...they are 90% efficient and have 100+ amps on the 12v rail...there are other good psus liek seasonic, but itès best to do the research.

Do you plan on overclocking the video cards too

It's a Thermaltake Toughpower? Should be fine. Probably a CWT PSH (think Corsair TX850). Not top of the line, but solid.

Yes I will most likely OC the GPU's as well. Thanks for the quick replies. And nice to see another person from Austin I'm just trying to figure out where my money will be best spent. Pondering Case,PSU and water cooling. Money will go fast hehe. I already have one of the GTX 560Ti.
Thinking about this PSU http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817139015
And maybe this case http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811112239
Ill have to check around in the Case forum's to see how friendly that case is with water.

Yeah its a Toughpower, just concerned with the age and that there are better out there atm. Almost 4 years old but I payed a pretty penny for it when I got it.

That Lancool case is excellent. Definitely a good choice for watercooling. The Corsair AX850 will be overkill for your system, though. I would hang on to your current PSU for now and spend no more than $120 on a new one whenever you decide to upgrade.

While I own a Kill-a-watt meter, and do use it, please dont assume what you read on the screen is what you need for a PSU. It is not that simple. What the PSU is producing is DC watts, and you will find yourself short changing yourself to think what its pulling is same as what its producing.

Well yes, but if you multiply it by the approximate efficiency of the PSU at a given % load, you do get a good estimate of DC output. When one can be had for only $20, why not?
