Storage Expansion: RAID Advice

Thread Starter
Alright, so I run a movie/TV server for all my friends, and I've been considering a storage upgrade soon since transfer rates have been running a little slowly (and I just want an excuse to upgrade).

Right now I have the following:
1 60GB Vertex 2 for OS/Programs
2 Samsung F3 1TB in RAID 1 for Video/Games/Data
(using P55 Intel RAID)

I'm considering any three of the following upgrades:
1. $140: TWO more F3 1TB for a total of four in RAID 5
2. $140: TWO more F3 1TB for a total of four in RAID 10
3. $80: ONE more F4 2TB. Put the F3's in RAID 0, and make backups to the F4

I'm inclined to do #3 given that it's the cheapest and should have the fastest transfer rates. I won't need more than 2TB of storage for a while.

Questions:
Which would you recommend?
Is the F4 2TB the best drive for the job here?
If #3, what imaging software should I use for consistent backups to the 2TB drive?

Thanks for reading!

Just do option 3, as far as I remember the onboard controller is a good one for raid 1 or 0 but anything over that there is a performance hit.

here are my F3 500 GB in raid0 on a 260 GB partition. And it was done with my system NOT at idle

Make sure you update the firmware on the F4EG 2TB, there's a nasty bug in the shipped firmware. Look here for more details. I took delivery of three of these today, and updating the firmware was the first thing I did.

Ooh, the model identified there (HD204UI) matches up with what I ordered:

Do my F3s require a similar update?

It would appear not. You're fine with those by all accounts. I'd follow the link in that thread that points to the Samsung forums to make sure, but I believe the F3 1TB is unaffected.

Good to know.

As for the F4, a lot of the lit seems to be past-tense. Haven't they updated the firmware on drives sold by today?

No way to tell, because the currently-shipping drives have the same firmware release number as the fixed firmware. Hence, there's no way to tell if the all of the supply lines are now carrying the new drives. Dumb move by Samsung, IMHO.
