I think you should change the title!

Only a minuscule proportion of these would actually be 'habitable', and even then only with a lot of technological help
you're right, he shouldn't say 50 million, so he didn't, he said 500 million. 50 million habitable planets by humans actually might be an accurate conservative amount.

which brings us to the fact that habitable zone means just that - its the best guess on where life can exist as we know it, it might not be intelligent life but we're talking about the possibility of extremophile bacteria etc...

which then also brings us to the fact that the habitable zone is just a best guess and doesn't count the fact that life could exist elsewhere in special circumstances (such as on the edges of a tidal locked planet that is otherwise considered too close to its parent star or too far out such as in the potential water oceans under Europa's icy surface, oceans hypothesized to exist to to tidal flexing caused by Jupiter)

The fact that there is life on earth is nothing short of a miracle. And I do mean that in a scientific sense. And I think it could hold true elsewhere. But life as intelligent as us? That's beyond a miracle. I guess I'm just a huge skeptic on this. I think if intelligent life were out there it would have reached out to us by now. Then again there are just way too many possibilities to consider of what life out there is like.

Ultimately I say we keep hoping and we keep looking.

Really? The way I look at it, the universe (heck, even our own galaxy) is so ghastly huge that it would be a miracle if there wasn't other intelligent life.

One of the reason why Earth is inhabitable now is because we have a moon which is large enough to keep the Earth spinning and not becoming gravitationally locked to the sun. So if you want a habitable planet, you'll need a moon or two as well.

500 million, not 50

and even if only 0.1% of those were inhabitable by life AS WE know it, that's still a HUGE number of planets with life.

+1

I think you're half correct here.

The fact that we're here is based on uncountable trillions of variables that happened just right to get us to the stage of homo sapiens or 'intelligent life'. And it took a long Fn time to get here too - in terms of the age of the universe, we've only been around for a blink or two.

Regarding intelligent life being able to contact us by now? We can't reach but a couple of proverbial inches considering the size of the galaxy / universe, I'm not sure we should expect other intelligent life (if it's out there) to be able to.

For all we know, we're the first intelligent life in the galaxy. Which while a long shot, is just as likely as us being the latest set of intelligent life.

Most likely if there is other intelligent life forms out there, they are doing pretty much what we're doing right now. Looking at the sky and then saying, "Our budget won't allow for exploration just yet, how about another decade, it's not going anywhere."

Pft. There's life out there alright. What kind, I dunno. There is a possibility that our radio communications are interfering with their daily holo-gizmo shows, and they're getting pissed off, and will come destroy us. Then again, it could just be a bunch of amoebas having sex with themselves.

Even if there's only 5 million habitable planets, I still think thats enough.
