First Post, 5400 Outperforms 10,000 RPM Raptor! help?

Thread Starter
Hi all, first post here ive read endless posts on this forum and figure its about time to register.

Heres my dilema...

My rig has a 80gb sata 10,000 rpm WD raptor and ive been doing read/write tests on it as well as my (cheapo) laptop which has a 5400 RPM seagate 3.5'' (celeron 900 @ 2.2ghz 800mhz FSB)

To my astonishment, the seagate 5400 outperformed my raptor my well over 20MB/s here are the results in DiskTT:

Test File size: 2048MB, 64kb Blocks, No applications running besides DiskTT Test ran 5 times.

Raptor 10,000 Rpm:

Write: 52MB/s
Read: 41MB/s

5400 rpm Seagate 3.5'' HD

Write: 74MB/s
Read: 71MB/s

As you can see, My 5400rpm is Largely outperforming my 10,000 rpm! Very frustrating considering i bought the raptor for performance, Both test were ran directly after restarting windows with nothing running in the backround, Both are sata interface.

Im stumped and would appreciate any input as to why i am getting these results. Please note ive tested with DiskBench as well getting nearly the same results.

EDIT

HDtach results

Short bench

Long bench

hdtach reports 69 mb/s which is certainly better but is this really up to par with most 10,000 rpm drives?

well considering the point of the raptor is really seek time I think you should include that in your results as well in order to see if your drive is even working normally.

The Raptor's good at random read/write and access times, a field where the slowass in your lappy would be lightyears under your Raptor.

Anyways, it's not good to see 52MB/s. Do you have the SATA mode enabled, or something?

Sata Mode is not enabled to my knowledge, It just baffles me that a drive spinning at almost twice the rpm, Is reading and writing slower than a discount laptop. I am not near my raptor machine at the moment but will post screenshots of diskTT results asap.

Im suspecting some kind of drive problem for im getting better results with my old 5400 rpm IDE WD vs my raptor. Is there any tool which can run in-depth diagnostics on my drive? i will search for solutions while i await replies thanks again!

EDIT- The 5400 3.5'' is 250 GB, Raptor is 80GB

Update: Drive passed all windows diagnostics test, defragmented properly, everest reported drive is working properly.

Any other ideas? 52mb/s seems pitiful for a 10,000 rpm drive.

That Raptor isn't exactly new (probably released in 2004). I think it's actually working up-to-par. Drive speed is not only based off of RPM, but platter density as well.

Check out these benchmarks I found on an overclockers.com thread:

It would really help if you could give us the specifics of each drive (model number, etc).
