The Witcher 1&2 - Anygood?

Hiho all.

Want a new game to get into but the only thing that i can find is really the Witcher series (seen the name thrown about alot), i've really played every title out there to death bar this/these.

Are they any good? I'm quite a fan of freeroaming RPG style games (IE Oblivion, Fallout 3, etc) IS this game like that? do i have a game world to explore or is it some linear experience much like Metro 2033 (Which, although good, was too..focused, for my liking)

If the recommendations are good, i'll start with the first one then progress onto Witcher 2.

Just out of curiousity which one is better? (No spoilers, please )

Thanks

I bought the enhanced edition for like 5-10 bucks during Steam sales, and it is one of the best gaming purchases I have ever made.

The Witcher has lots of branching storyline and optional subplots that only come into play based on previous decisions you've made in the game. So in this respect, it is more like Fallout or Mass effect. There many quests many of them are varied (nothing repetitious), and many have more than one possible solution.

One problem I have with the game is it's lack of customization. Unlike Fallout where you can have a melee class, or energy weapon class, you can only play as one character in The Witcher. I also don't like the inventory layout, and the combat system can be improved on.
