Clone drives?

Thread Starter
I have 3 Alienware M11XR2 laptops that have 120GB hard drive in them. I bought 3 Hitachi Travelstar 500GB hard drives to replace them. However, I have a few questions before I start.

1.) If the laptop came with a DVD to reinstall the OS can I just replace the drives and install the OS using the DVD provided? (Will it be activated?)

2.) Or, is it a better idea to clone the original drive and restore the image onto the new drive?

3.) Or, is there a better way that I do not know of?

Thanks~

1) Yes. If not, the key should be on the under side of the laptop and you should be able to activate. But for me (i have that lappy), it was activated.

2) Cloning will prevent driver hunting (from dell's site). I think this is better since it gives you a "clean" image that you can use to restore your lappy.

3) Windows Backup and Restore (built in feature in Windows 7) or Acronis True Image. Those are the two that I've used. I'm sure there are others.

Also: Why the f do you have 3 m11xr2s?

Thank you for your help. I opted to clone the drive on two laptops, and reformat on the other (just for the experience). Also I have 3 because I got them for really cheap and I plan on re-selling 2 of them and keeping 1 for myself; they're sick little beasts and can game quite well

Also another to use for free is comodo's version for cloning drives. That program works like a charm. As well as comodo internet security
