Free Droid X or wait for Bionic or Atrix? - Page 2

And out of the 6 phones I've had over the last 14 months, the Droid X wasn't anything special. If you just want to save a few bucks now, then by all means take the free phone.

But, if you want the latest and greatest, get the Bionic or Atrix. Many people will tell you that "the latest and greatest" is always replaced in a couple of months. While that may have been true in the 2H of 2010 with each new phone boasting the same processors with only 100-200MHz difference in clock speed and different UIs slapped on top, the difference in between the Droid X and the newer Bionic and Atrix are huge.

For starters -- dual-core. *HUGE* potential increase. With the newer dual-core processors comes new GPUs which will give you better graphics as the new games come along.

As I see it, there's really no reason for the X unless money is really an issue. If performance is even a small consideration, get one of the newer devices.

As for Verizon or AT&T -- it largely depends on coverage in your area. What good is a smartphone without a usable signal?
This guy has it exactly right. I'd say go Motorola Atrix now and AT&T's HSPA+ transition will be done on 3/1/2011, meaning you will have the increased speeds very soon. AT&T in my area is already giving me 6 MBPS or more on my iPhone 4, so I'd say you may already have the HSPA+ in your area.

Best advice so far. The Droid X is a very fast phone, I personally didn't get one because I thought it was too big, but if you don't mind its a great buy.

Droid X is ok, the rom support is completely mediocre compared to the others.

Sorry man, but if you buy the Droid X, you ARE going to be left behind. Apparently most of the people posting here aren't Android XDA members with 2 of the top phones in the US at the moment like myself. I will garauntee you will be wanting something better within 2 months when you walk into a store and play with the new Dual-core, Gingerbread phones. Besides, the DriodX doesn't even have Cyanogen Mod 7 or 6! Go to XDA developers and ask in the Droid X forum what your decision should be. Not here.

Hey, I still STILL have the original Droid and it's perfectly fine. I haven't had any particular desire to change it. That said, I wouldn't get a Droid X because it's too big and too hot for me.

What carrier will the Samsung Galaxy S2 be coming out for? Isn't that a much better option than the Atrix?

I disagree entirely. It depends on what his usage is. As a stock phone, it's perfectly fine and very snappy. I'm an XDA member and frequent those forums. I'm running a Droid Incredible w/ the Redemptive Revolution ROM with the Hydra kernel (I've run Cyanogen, Skyraider, etc you name it) and I love customizing my phone. However if he can get a viable phone like the Droid X for free, I don't think he should pass it up. Sure gingerbread seems really sweet and the dual core phones are nice, but right now there simply aren't any apps that take full advantage of a dual core. OP, unless you're someone who absolutely needs the latest and greatest (or you can't deal with a 4+ inch screen), I'd grab the X.

hey thanks, this is great input.

It doesn't bother me not having the latest and greatest. But a nice video camera would be nice. I'm starting to lurk around XDA and am slowly learning...really want an android phone!

Np man. Yeah, there's a whole world of things you can do with the android platform. It's pretty cool. I'm unfamiliar with the Droid X's video performance. Is it supposed to be any good?
