is it illegal to unlock an iPhone 4

is it illegal to unlock an iPhone 4 (different from jail breaking). Also, is it even possible to unlock an iPhone 4 from Verizon since Verizon phones do not accept SIM cards. Lastly, is there any difference from the iphone 4 from AT&T and the one from Verizon? Thanks in advance.

Verizon iPhone can't be used on any other network as it does not take a SIM card, although it does has a baseband which supports CMDA and GSM, which means the next iPhone that comes out will most likely be able to be used on either network. There are no difference between iPhones, I say go AT&T if AT&T has good coverage in your area as their network is over 35% faster.

It is not illegal I am pretty sure, but is against their terms of service or whatever the hell they are calling it these days. User End Agreement? Steve Jobs does not make laws lol.

Jailbreaking is no longer illegal.
You can't browse the web while talking to someone on Verizon... that's all I know so far lol.

Unlocking from AT&T basically just means you can use any other mobile service that uses GSM (like T-Mobile). So Verizon, which uses CMDA, will not work with your phone. And no it is not illegal for personal use. Laws get complicated, so remember as long as you don't sell your phone, you should be in the clear.

Well I'm broke at the moment and it's about time for me to renew my contract with Verizon. So most probably I'm going to stick with Verizon since I get like $50 or $100 off my next phone. My plan was to stick with my old phone I have now, by a new one (i was going to buy an iphone 4) and then sell it and gain a $400 profit (I need the money). Then i realized its worth more if it is unlocked but as you guys said, you can't unlock it since it doesn't use a SIM card. So now, here are my options. Buy it and then sell it and get the $400 profit. Or should I just buy a regular new phone...it doesn't make much difference to me since I can't afford the data plan anyways....

Not very sure how you are going to buy an IPhone4 on contract with Verizon without actually changing your plan to make it happen. You are looking to gain profit from a new phone that has been released on a CDMA network and unlocking doesn't apply here. GSM is what Tmobile and ATT use, while Sprint and Verizon use CDMA technologies. The only thing you can do to your phone if you bought it on Verizon ( Iphone4) is to Jailbreak it, thereby allowing you to get free apps in same cases. In my personal opinion the whole Apple OS is a peice of junk. Android is definitely the future of mobile phones. I phone is for those people who haven't learned what Android is or is capable of in comparison to Android. GO OPEN SOURCE!

Basically when you buy something it becomes your property and you can do whatever you want with disregarding a few caveats.

1. You don't make a profit off of the modification
2. Others don't make a profit off of the modification
3. You don't use the modification to offer the content to other users who have not paid for it.

Thus if you use applications that have a cost, but you obtained them for free, it is illegal.

The biggest problem with jailbreaking your phone is that it voids Apples responsibility to fix it if there is a problem or offer your support of any kind.

i was going to buy the iphone 4. The data plan ($30 a month I think) only gets activated if you activate the phone. So you can sell it with out activating it and its not bound to a contract (worth a lot more). Also, I was just wondering, since someone mentioned this, what's the best smart phone (including the iphone 4) to buy on Verizon? there are so many I can't choose. I might end up buying one and just keeping it and not selling it at all since I'm browsing them at the moment and a lot of its features would be helpful.

The HTC Thunderbolt will be out in a couple weeks. This will be your best bet to make a buck, giving you are selling it right out of the box and never open'd you will make to gain about $600. Best Buy has it releasing for Feb 25th, and Verizon will have it also very soon after that. This is your best bet to make money and keep your old phone.
