I need a little SLI help ^^

Thread Starter
Ok I just need some guidance ^^
I currently have a galaxy GTX 470.
An MF980-G65 mobo.
AMD 965 Be OC'd to 3.8Ghz.
And a Rosewill 100W 80+ Bronze PSU.

i'm wondering how, or if dual/tri SLI would work?
I am able to obtain 1 or 2 more GTX 470's.

I need guidance ^^

It can be as simple as these steps:
1. Insert the 2nd card into the centre blue PCIEx16 slot (with your current card already in the top blue PCIEx16 slot)
2. Connect the 2 cards with the SLI Bridge (which should come with your motherboard)
3. Connect two 6-pin PCIE power connectors from your PSU to the new card
4. Boot up and your PC will detect the new card and tells you that you can enable SLI
5. Enable SLI in Nvidia Control Panel
^You would need to re-install drivers after adding the card.

Is my PSU ok for Tri GTX 470's and will my CPU bottleneck with them?
Will I run into micro stutter?
And are there PCI expansions or something?
Cause they would take up every slot.
Meaning no sound card.
And I just can't have on board.
Solutions?

1. I think your PSU (Rosewill RBR-1000M) is able to handle 3-way SLI GTX470 (just do not overclock them). It has 3 x 6-Pin and 3 x 6+2-Pin PCIE connectors.

2. Your CPU will be a bottleneck. Guru3d used an i7 965 at 3.75GHz to do 3-way SLI on 2560x1600 and experienced CPU bottlenecks. Considering your CPU is weaker and your resolution (1920x1080) is lower, you will certainly run into more bottlenecks than them.

Link:http://www.guru3d.com/article/geforc...-sli-review/26

3. Microstutter--probably not much...no one can be sure of this.

4. Your motherboard has built-in Audio chipset Realtek ALC889 (check the I/O panel at rear and you will see the outputs). So, no need of a sound card.

Note: The biggest challenge of all is to manage well the heat generated from the 3 cards.

I don't think the heat will be that large an issue as long you maintain decent airflow throughout the case. The cards do run hot, but they are engineered with SLI in mind (I think our eternal preoccupation to keeping our components running a couple degrees cooler is akin to people keeping their nice cars clean than it is about actually extending life or improving performance).

You will probably experience some bottlenecking but a bigger issue is that tri SLI is not very well optimized for a lot of games because of the lack of people who invest in three card solutions. Two card scaling these days regardless of AMD or Nvidia is quite good but beyond that you are better off getting two higher end cards.

Microstuttering will depend on what games you play, the settings you play them at and whether you have things like Vsync enabled, there is no definitive way to say whether you will or will not have microstuttering.

Well I have a HAF-932 with 7 120mm 1 140mm and 1 240mm.
I think that's enough for cooling.
Thanks alot for the help
But one more question. What exactly does a CPU bottleneck do?

basically ur cpu is not fast enough to tell the gpu what to do so there is no extra performence when u hit it.

ie if you bottleneck with 2 GTX 580's , you will get same performence with 200 GTX 580's

I hear 3 way is pointless, plus have you considered these?: (to save slot space)
