My Single Core PC Seems faster than my x3 core PC

Thread Starter
So I've just built a new pc and it seems alot slower than my old pc, It might be just me I dont know, but the reviews on the cpu i bought, people were saying it was amazing.

I've tryed windows xp 64bit and windows 7 64bit and it seems so slow, My new pc takes like 10 seconds to open firefox and my old pc is istant, my new pc takes over a minute to load up windows when my old pc takes 40-45 seconds. it feels alot slower when installing things aswell. I haven't tested much because i feel i didn't need to, those 3 things show me its slow... maybe its just me, i was expecting a beast pc compared to my old. I just thought a x3 3.2ghz would munch on a 2.4ghz. I've tryed the 445 x3 3.1ghz cpu aswell and still slow. could it be my motherboard? have i picked a very bad and slow motherboard? I have read ppl have the cpu running on 2000mhz HT Link and mine only goes to 1000mhz, cpu supports 2000mhz but my mobo doesn't.

New spec is

AMD Athlon ii x3 3.2ghz
Asrock M3A UCC AMD 480X Socket AM3
4GBDDR3 PC1333 - 1x2GB single sided ram and 1x2GB double sided ram
XFX Radeon HD 5450 1GB DDR3
80GB sata 8MB cache 7200rpm
CIT 450W Dual 12V Rail

My Old pc spec
4ghz 939 running at 2.4ghz
2gb kingston ddr400
msi k8n neo4
the same harddrive thats in my new system
300watt power supply

Maybe i can show pics of my bios settings ( its default atm ) maybe i have something wrong and you guys can help me speed this thing up, not happy atm

any help or ideas would be brilliant

What you are describing is completely tied to your hard drive's speed, not your processor. Once the Prefetcher function works itself back into a groove, you'll be back up to speed.

However, even then, it won't be any faster than the old one at loading things, since you haven't changed hard drives.

Yep. Hell, if you're content with 80GB, you should shell out the money for a 128GB SSD. You'll be drooling over your PC for years.

Also again, SEEMS is a key word, you have an expectation that it should be XXX fast, thus are disappointed because in every day mundane things, its not much faster. In example, I have two computers sitting at my desk, 1 is my sig. rig, and another is a dual core celeron with 2GB of memory, and a 9800GT and they both "feel the same" when booting, and opening a web browser, but when it comes to running a game, well... guess which one wins? Do some comparison benches, grab a new hard drive, and you'll be fine.

Also don't forget, with a newer motherboard, it is loading a lot more things than your old motherboard, it has a lot more components, so boot time is going to take a bit longer.

the HD is probably not helping, but it should be at least as fast as the old PC,

that's an unusual motherboard, is the sata working at the correct speed?

I have a strange feeling that the HD is Sata I.

I would go back to BIOS and check the settings too.
