[TechnoBuffalo] Digital Distribution is Scary for Gamers - Page 4

I love steam, I dont have to worry about losing discs and if my hdd crashes just re-dl the games. and my settings will all be the same. I remember back when I had simcity 3000 a long time ago and I wanted to play it again but I couldnt find the disc. I had to end up buying a new copy... but I will always miss you lost simcity 3000 disc.

Interesting, though. Personally I don't ever think Steam will go out of business, and the internet isn't going anywhere for a while to say the least. Let's just say we don't have anything to worry about within our lifetimes.
I find it extremely hard to believe if a company is going out of business that they would want to or have the funds to distribute the hard copies of all those games to every customer. The cost alone would be staggering, not including the time and effort for a company that has no reason to do so.

Unlocking the games so they work in offline mode and/or giving keys I could possibly see though. We would just have to make our own disc backups in case we format. I don't think we will have to worry about anyway, don't see Steam going anywhere in the next decade or two at least.

Games should be played with dice on a board! None of this computer stuff. Heck, even better go outside.

You all sound like old grandpas. "I like to hold it in my hand"! Bah humbug. All that disk is really is a patch installer. You get the game and have to DL 2x the size of a cd to patch it. Better off just DL the digital copy.

It's still there, you can download the game, burn it to a disc, keep it in your firesafe. Load it up when you want.

"Right. Ignore Steam here. I cite my faults with Xbox LIVE, PSN and WiiWare type distribution. Steam is awesome... I say that.

I do make the used games argument. But I also make an argument that older content is not appropriately priced. Modern Warfare 2 on Xbox LIVE is my specific example. They're selling it for $59. It's more than a year old.

If we go entirely digital, the only users that will reap the benefits are PC gamers, and that's because Steam is awesome. Console users are screwed..." Joey Davidson - writer of article in the comments

He's talking about the prospects of digital distribution on consoles. Since they would be controlled by the console manufacturer, I can see why he is worried. On the PC there are a ton of alternatives to Steam to drive down prices but console gamers could get screwed over.

That doesn't help anything, that would mean I am required internet access to play my games still, also it would render the "Go offline" button when steam tries to connect without a network useless.
