Just the basics...

Ok, so I had built my Father in Law a budget AMD gaming build a few years back and it served its purpose - great bang for buck and it played his games.

Since then he has been introduced to Steam, games have become a bit more hardware intensive and he had upgraded himself to a nice 1920x1200 monitor... and well - basically he is realizing his PC isn't playing the games the way he wants them to. He thinks just a small upgrade would do the trick - but I decided to raid my stash of spare parts.

So I pulled a GTX 470 from my sli setup and am donating that to his rig, I am decommissioning an HTPC setup and will used those parts as well for his new rig and found an old Artic Freezer Pro 7 Rev.2 in the closet. The only cash I had to lay out was $130 for an x4 970 BE.

So going from this setup.

Code:
Athlon 64 X2 6000+ Windsor
MSI K9A2 CF-F V2 AMD 790X
eVGA 8800GT Superclocked 512MB
OCZ 4x1GB DDR2 800 Dual Channel
Antec NeoPower 550 550W
Hanns·G HH-281HPB 28" 3ms@1920x1200
Windows XP
To this one
Code:
AMD Phenom II X4 970 BE ($130 purchase) w/Artic Freezer Pro 7 Rev.2 (from spare parts)
Gigabyte GA-MA785G-UD3H (Donated from spare parts)
eVGA GTX470 (Donated from my main Rig SLI)
OCZ 2x2GB DDR2 800 Dual Channel(Donated from spare parts)
Antec NeoPower 550 550W (his current rig)
Hanns·G HH-281HPB 28" 3ms@1920x1200 (his current rig)
Win 7 Home Premium 64 bit (hurray Microsoft discount programs!)
So I know that there will be an increase in performance. I know that the board and DDR2 will neuter it to some degree... but since this is all out of my pocket as a present I need to keep costs low

That being said - with the new build in mind -and with the added info that this rig WILL be inside a smokers household...

What reasonable expectations should I take into OC'n this for a 24/7 clock that would be safe on the board, with the given RAM, and the given environment? Should I aim for highest possible OC or just 4Ghz or 3.8Ghz etc? The ONLY thing that matters for this rig is to play video games as he does little else with his PC.

For now I will NOT be upgrading further motherboard or Ram. That will have to wait until I get more funds or he provides more funds

Also what is kind of temperatures should I be keeping it below when I stress test it with IBT and Prime95? I know that AMD heat req's are lower then Intel and the OC'n is a bit different...

A 550 watt power supply is really pushing it for a 470. Especially for an OC'd system. Nvidia states 550 as the bare minimum for that card, if I remember correctly......

Damn...didn't think about that since my wife's rig has only a 550w as well and her processor running at 4ghz with a gtx470.... but then again it is an intel setup so not sure if there is a difference in terms of draw on the PSU when at load between that and an AMD system... Haven't run into problems with her rig. So should I look at the PSU as a possible weak link that might need upgrade then?

*Edit* Just checked my wife's rig with prime95 and Furmark running everything full peg and the power draw was between 480 to 530 watts at peak... maybe I should PSU shop for both their rigs then? Or since neither of them run their rigs at full gallop on a regular basis is 550W just ok?

+Rep btw - thanks for pointing out the PSU issue - looks like I would be running right at the edge with power draws and will ahve to manage an upgrade as soon as possible on the PSU's then.

The 785G board + 970 isn't a very good idea unless you keep to stock and use the stock cooler... 4+1 phase, and it's a cheaped out one (older Gigabyte mobo)

Darn I was hoping you would tell me it was one of the OK 4+1's BTW great thread on that topic!

Alright so keep to stock until I can swing a full motherboard upgrade then eh (or maybe wait for a nice AM3+ motherboard to come around...hmmm)? Reason I picked up the 970 BE, since I feared the chances of not being able to do much OC'n because of the board figured highest stock clocked processor at budget price...

So you feel the stock cooler would be better then the Artic Freezer Pro 7 Rev.2 if I was to OC it?

I don't suggest OCing rigs that aren't your own. The 970 is plenty fast right out of the gate. If you absolutely can't resist, keep it conservative, like 3.7GHZ and be done with it.
