Don't know if my PSU is just not up to the task or if it was the luck of the draw. Any thoughts?
Your power supply is more than enough. During an extreme benching session I only pulled ~650W from the wall and for my 24/7 clocks it's around ~500W or so.

As PoopaScoopa asked, which method did you use to flash your 6950's?

Ah hah. I used the Tech PowerUp method with the stock 6970 bios. Later I heard people talking about ram timings and such and thought.......PFFFT, whatever, it had worked for me without any issues (or so it had seemed at the time). I got a second card a little later and when CFX didn't work while OCed I did not give my unlocking method a second thought. A second chance at CFX 6970s, you have given me some hope!

Can I ask, which Bios would you recommend? I am sure Google knows but if there is more then one choice I would rather have a recommendation. Also, I thought I read somewhere that the 6950 could not go any higher then two card crossfire, no 3 way. Any truth to that?

Thanks, so the PSU is no longer a suspect. I think PoopaScoopa is on to something, will have to try it out soon.

Not sure since I never did it personally. I thought the Techpowerup thread on it had posts in there with the modified bios talking about the different memory timings. There was a news thread on the unlocking here on OCN that might shed more light onto it if there isn't info in that thread on Techpowerup.

I have made some progress. My second attempt at overclocking the 6950s with the flashed 6970 bios worked, this time I followed the steps outlined in the "how to overclock ATI" thread. Previously I was just using the ATI Overdrive tab to try match the 6970 clocks. I gave it a little more voltage and viola, it appears to be rock solid. I was not able to hit Compudaze's numbers unfortunately, I could only go as high as 890 and be 100% stable, and I was unwilling to go higher then 1.175V. A modest overclock, but I guess you have to start somewhere.
I am curious if I had used the modified bios that just unlocked the shaders, could I have gone higher in my OC? I would try but I don't know if it would make a big difference, some of the threads suggest that my 1090T is a bottleneck (another modest OC at 4GHZ). What do you think?

Glad it helped you all out.

Now I have two flames =)

Any interest on CFX scaling benches with shaders on/off?

Hello, I got the ASUS 6950 DCII. I used smart doctor to adjust the voltage to 1.175 and then oc like you, 1375 and 920 however it's unstable with lot of games I run. I don't know why but every oc I try is unstable even if it was much lower

could it be cpu bottleneck? please respond thanks.

Also your review is awesome man keep it up you made me bye this card and I don't regret it even I don't overclock.

Good read. After learning the performance increase was only slight, I'm going to decide against unlocking my HD 6950. Its a great performing card in itself tbh.

Did this used to have pics?

Kindof a bummer there's so little gain to be gotten by unlocking. When I unlocked my 465's to 470's I gained about 25% performance. Of course, the % of shaders unlocked was much higher, plus it also widened the bus from 256 to 320-bit and added 256MB of ram.
