By 2020 the pc as we know it will have morphed into something totally new and bazaar.

But really I am sure the changes will be incredible.Things are moving towards an all in one based home communications and recreation unit with portable receivers to connect to it.

also I believe that we will eventually have many cores running many efficient threads in order to do simple things. like a gpu really, but the trouble with some of the code for that today is that we need to identify exactly what thread needs to do what and then combine it back together...great for putting things on a screen, but computing things number wise it's much more difficult. in fact my school offers an enitre major dedicated to optimizing the multithreaded performance of computers doing scientific and computational work, and in fact we do work with cuda on top of the processors.

it's a tough thing to determine, but in my personal/semi professional opinion we will be headed towards many many cores on one platform, where there will be 4 to 8 primary cores which handle large chunks of data and hundreds of small cores that handle small chunks of data visually...we're already seeing that with sandy bridge and bulldozer, it's just not that powerful yet...

More realistically a optical computer would be used. By using protons rather than electrons in a transistor a computer could be built. Although its a far ways off it is currently being researched and we are constantly getting closer.

really its all up to what our robotic super computer overlords will want.
im sure they will design some awesome now cpu's to power their global
domination campaign.but we wont ever see the tech as they wont allow
us any access to the actual silicone or fabs,but they will find some kind
of use for us in the first few years(slave labor)until they decide were not

i was aware that protons as charge carriers are being researched, but i was not aware that could even be implemented in computers(from what i've seen this has been something used primarily for research and bonding purposes only). protons weigh so much more than electrons that getting them to move and transfer charge takes a lot of energy, not to mention the artificial bonding that would occur at those levels. it just seems unreasonable. it's much more likely we'd be looking to form permanent cooper pairs to transfer charge efficiently...for computers it's likely we'd be seeing a new system based off of a trinay system to evolve. such as repel= -1, off=0, attract=1 but this is a long long way off

I find your username particularly fitting given your mishaps in this thread. Maybe you meant when color TV was introduced to the U.S., which was 1964 I believe.

Graphene is actually moving along at a startling pace. All my research is on extended graphene defects. We are working on using Nickel templates to produce repeated defects in a sheet of graphene. These defects are producing very interesting semi-conducting properties. My research group believes it may be possible to create p-n junctions without dopants. Graphene will also shrink die sizes from nanometers down to angstroms (an order of 10). It's very exciting stuff, but it's prolly at least a decade away from consumer pcs.

Below is a picture of a defect that has been recreated in a lab by some university of florida researchers. Matthias Batzill, I believe was the main guy's name. Anyway, this is an extended defect structure, that can repeat. It is laid upon a substrate of 111-Ni. If you are interested just PM me.
