All of them are completely different in terms of gameplay. But they're all sandbox games.

I agree with all of these, I just add Just Cause 2 to the mix, but it is not a "sandbox" game, just an open world game akin to GTA, but looks awesome and is loads of fun.

Have you tried an MMO? Probably the very definition of "free roaming"
FreeLancer.

Can't get much bigger than open space. Nothing quite as exciting as trying to make a jump gate before 100 pirates can kill you and steal your diamonds.

Or you could play Spore.

Both are huge games with a lot of replay value, but then again, there are so many great games out there, it really depends on what you are looking for. Just Cause 2 has one of the largest maps out there.

Sacred 2 is pretty open. Not a terrible game, though not one of the best either. It will keep you going for a while though.

Need for Speed Hot Pursuit is a good driving game. I enjoyed that far more than Test Drive Unlimited 2. I enjoyed the first Test Drive Unlimited more than Test Drive Unlimited 2.

Test Drive Unlimited 2 is not as good in comparison. It's a buggy, glitchy, game, the handling and physics aren't very good and require alot of tweaking just to make it feel right, AI cars just disappear right in front of you. It also feels slow. Graphics aren't really all that great either, not that this is a gamebreaker, but I've seen better looking racing games.

You have relatively little freedom of choice in the game regardless of how much money you earn. The game gives you the impression of being a sandbox style game yet it feels very linear in terms of character development.

A decent game when playing with friends, like any game geared towards playing online, but it needs alot of optimisation, and fixes.

Every 3D GTA game ever made, the 3D Fallouts are okay though they lack the tools for cocking about that GTA does and crash alot, and Garry's Mod is literally you in a sandbox with a bunch of stuff.

Any suggestions for games that have large open areas with free roam, or just sandbox games or something in-between? smile.gif
Far Cry 2, GTA IV and San Andreas. Fall Out 3 and New Vegas are free roam to an extent. Oblivion and Morrowind are good Free Roamers.

Just Cause 1 and 2 are both free roamers. I liked the graphics and some aspects of 2 but 1 was a bit more fun. The only bad thing about 1 is that the "liberation" was the same thing everytime and got really old really fast where as in 2, the "liberation" was just blow stuff up and find items which got really old, really fast.

Mafia II has some Free Roam aspects but it's most mission based

Mount and Blade is insanely fun and the mods are endless.
