need retard proof router

Thread Starter
Here's the thing, I absolutely despise routers and setting up networks and anything related to it...I just do, however out of the two other roommates that I have I am going to have to do it. We currently have a really crappy router (it loses 50% download speed being hooked up to it compared to directly to the modem, some wru-52gl or something like that). I play quake online, roommate uses his ps3 for online games and netflix pretty much everynight. His girls over as well, crushing our bandwith with youtube videos on her phone, and the other roommate watches every youtube video posted. I need a router that is absolutely retard proof to allow me to at least give myself enough bandwith while they're using the internet so I can play some FPS games online. I'm really not interested in flashing routers and installing other software. Anyone have any ideas on routers for something like this? I'm pretty much willing to spend whatever to get the features that will work for us.

We have a 15 mb connection, is it even possible to set the max that they can use at once is 5'ish?

Thanks much all

Do you have a link to said router? Newegg and amazon.com not showing anything for Cisco e6500...or e6500.

That I'm not sure of. When was messing around with my new dd-wrt router I saw something like delegation in the settings. However, that's 3rd party firmware and you said you're not interested in flashing.

EDIT: Found it, but it's not a linksys like I thought. It's a professional grade switch. http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/...708/index.html

A simple router can't limit the use of netflix and youtube? I need a switch?

i think their just messing with you... with that said the consumer routers already do their best trying to be "retard proof" and the "retard proof" feature your looking for is QOS. It allows you prioritize traffic on the router. You could prioritize specific ports, applications, computers or specific Ethernet jacks that are on the router.

Any chance you are using the WRT54GL? Linksys routers already do have some type of qos engine built in their firmware. You should at least update the router to the latest firmware for the most up to date QOS engine.

If you need a new router, this could work without breaking the wallet.

It would be the asus wl-520GU router. Since I play quakelive, anytime I try to prioiritize with their built-in QoS - it just breaks the connection. I go from spiking 50-60 ping to 999 constantly. I'm assuming it's just a modem thing (in addition from going from 15mb/s to 7mb/s when connected directly to the asus).
