Should I swap my Q6600 to my girl's Q9950?

Hi to everyone,

The title pretty much says it but a little more info. I got my computer set up a long time ago but I helped my girl get her computer some what after a year I got mine built. So that explains why she has a newer Intel Core 2 Quad.

I asked her if its alright with her if I can switch processors since I'll be needing it more than she will since she just does basic stuff. I even overclock. So will it be alright if I swap with her? I don't know much about the Q9950 but is it good to overclock? The Q6600 I have has a stock clock of 2.4Ghz and the Q9950 is at 2.8 stock. So I was thinking it can go more over 3.5Ghz but I'm not sure.

I don't have enough budget to build a whole new system so what I can do is just overclock a bit more and use a 6870 with a new power supply. Again a new power supply because I believe mine is degrading and at the same time its not strong as new power supplies.

Thank you.

If she says its ok, then it's ok. Lol The Q9x50's overclock quite well actually, I'd expect 4GHz if not more on it.

the 9550 for sure.. it will run cooler and higher than your 6600.

First: Why did you build her computer with a q9950 in the first place?

Second: Why did you not steal it earlier?

The Q9550 is faster clock for clock compared to the Q6600, and it also has more L2 cache. It will do 3.4 or 3.5Ghz at stock voltage most likely. Remember that going for 3.5Ghz you will need to overclock your memory modules as they are rated for 800mhz. 3.4Ghz will put you at 400 FSB x 8.5. 400 FSB 1:1 is 800mhz on the memory.

I'd do it...if she said ok.

Hell hath no fury like a woman...whose shiny processor was switched out from under her.

I have no idea that time that she only needed a Dual Core

Thank you. You have given me early info on what to do.
Also knowing that you are using the same processor. So my RAM's won't be a problem right? Its weird when I check CPU-Z it shows 400Mhz but my ratio in the BIOS is 1:1 and it shows 800 any ideas? I even manually set the RAM timings to its default even the volts so it will be stable than [Auto]

To be honest I don't think she would really notice a performance drop at all if all she does is basic stuff.
