Canon 550D T2i and Canon T2i big difference?

Hi, my brother has always wanted to get into amatur photography and with taxes return he is thinking of getting a camera.

He has seen a lot of videos on youtube about how well it takes pics and records video (he loves that). But, he gets confused with some videos showing they are using a 550D T2i and some are using just a T2i. Is there a big difference between the 2? He will be most interested in recording video, but yet he wants this camera.

The cheapest he has found is $829 w/ EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Lens and a tripod. But, the 550D seems to be around 1,000.

I'll appreciate the help.

btw... he knows nothing about photography and I wonder if the 550D features if there is any will even benefy him or even know how to use them. I know nothing about cameras, too.

other then the name and warranty (t2i == USA, 550D == not USA) there is no difference between the two.

Thanks, a lot no wonder why I saw somewhere Europe under parentisis. But I thought there was something else since there is quite a price difference.

Depends on the tripod. Link? Typically these package deals that include things like bags, card readers, tripods, etc. are terrible deals because all the accessories are overpriced crap, but they lead you to believe you're getting a good deal. I would get the body and kit lens and buy you accessories separately.

I'm pretty sure the T2i price will drop soon as the T3i has been released.

If you don't need a flip screen the T2i is just as good

uh He ended up buying it before I could tell him anything. Since he hasnt recieved it he can return it if you guys can point me into a better deal.

The body and the lens were a bit over $829 so he thought that $829 with a tripod which picture is not included was decent price.

btw I couldnt find the t2i and the lens any cheaper than Amazon w/o having to pay taxes or after taxes.

Do you guys think he should return it and just wait. He needs the camera by April since he is going to take pics in my Wedding smile.gif

April is still a long ways off. I'd return it and wait until March. You said he won't need it til then anyways, so there's no harm in waiting for prices to drop.

Beyond that, like others have said, "tripod" really doesn't matter without knowing the specific tripod. We could be (very likely) talking about those cheapo Walmart tripods that are about as sturdy as a drunk three-legged elephant, in which case it wouldn't be worth the money IMO.

For an amateur, I'd also recommend the Canon T3. It's not as good of a camera as the T2i, but it's still pretty good, offering video as well and debuting cheaper than the T2i. Another alternative is the T1i, which can be found used for ~$500 and offering proven image quality and 1080p video.

It doesn't sound as nice as a T2i, but given the budget, I'd definitely suggest that over the T2i. The extra money can be put towards a better lens or a flash, which would help much more for a wedding (usually poorly lit rooms) than a T2i with kit lens. A T1i with a 28mm f/1.8 used can usually be had for the same price as a T2i with 18-55mm kit lens, and I'd definitely take the T1i over that for a wedding.

I think I'm going to have him ship it back. I just hope he doesnt have to pay to ship it back since it was sold by canon through Amazon.

I guess he just got desparated to buy it since it said only 2 in stock and thought it was a good deal because everywhere he looked the camera and the lens were 900+ or had to pay taxes. I'm going to have him look at the T1i.

Is the video from T1i as good as the T2i?
