O/Cing GTX 580

I haven't seen much on this around here.

I have an EVGA Superclocked GTX 580 and I was just wondering what the most normal way to O/C SLI GTX 580s would be in terms of frequencies, memory, etc.

Also, what software would be most ideal for it and should I flash the BIOS after so that if I reformat or whatnot, the cards remain overclocked? My buddy told me to do this but I was curious because what happens if they're overclocked too much and I flash it and they continue to crash? How do I change them back since it's not a BIOS setting?

Usually people just use MSI Afterburner or EVGA Precision to overclock a GPU. Either one will work and there are no differences in the stability/performance/heat/power usage of the overclock between the two. They are basically the same program but each looks different and has a different layout. So use whichever one you like the most.

I do not know how to flash the BIOS on a GPU though, sorry.

When you use these tools to overclock you will test for stability and then you can tweak the settings as you see fit easily with the software. Then when you are sure you are stable and are to an overclock that you like you can flash the BIOS. Although not flashing the BIOS works just fine too. Each of these programs can auto-apply your overclock to the GPU every time you start your computer for you so it is like you flashed the BIOS anyways! Also, be aware that flashing the BIOS will void your warranty on the card.

That's fine, sorry!

I mean what would I gain the most benefit from adjusting. I've never OCed a video card before. I know it's got memory, clock speeds, etc. I'm just trying to get an idea on what I should be adjusting or focusing on.

Yes, quite a bit! I would overclock the core clock for the most gains in FPS, you should overclock all of it pretty evenly though. Memory is nearly instantaneous so when you overclock that it will not give you a whole lot more noticeable performance. When you overclock the GPU clock you can get much more performance. The GTX580 versus the GTX580 superclocked edition from EVGA have a difference of about 2-3FPS for only a small difference in the core clock.

I believe that overclocking the memory will help most when you play at super-high res but I may be mistaken. If someone knows what overclocking the GPU memory really helps that would be nice to know since I am not sure.

Core Clock: 797
Shader Clock: 1594
Memory Clock: 2025

Would you mind offering up a possible MAXIMUM limit for each of those? Or, how much increments should I increase them by at a time? And what am I looking for before I stop? I know with the CPU you don't want too much voltage but with these I see no option for voltage. Should I stop at a certain temperature instead?

Anyways though, should I increase core clock first and then find the max for that and go onto the shader clock and then the memory? Or should I do them all at the same time in a smaller increment? Any suggestions?

the core clock and shader clock need to be in a 1:2 ratio for stability. So dont unlink them. Usually you just go until you hit a temp past where you feel safe. I would not go past 90-95C although it is all up to you. The software will not allow a voltage that will kill the card or cause larges amounts of damage so there is no need to worry there. Just watch the temps and you should be fine. If you are using air then you will not want to go past 850MHz I would say. Although I have not really really overclocked my 580, so doing a little googling will do you some good or posting in the NVIDIA forums.

Guys someone please help.

This kinda thing is what confuses me the most. From my research, a lot of people stop OCing there 580 at 900/1800 and like 2100 memory. I'm already past that and my temperatures haven't passed 40C in Furmark in 1920x1200. My scores have gone consistently from 1550, 1650, 1750, 1850, and now 1880 with my GPU at 925/1850, memory at 2110. Should I stop here? Am I damaging anything?

I haven't changed the voltage nor do I see an area that even tells me what the voltage is at. Is this bad?

ah, that card is designed to throttle when it is under FurMark, you have to use a difference stress tester. Sorry for not mentioning that earlier.

I will say that you are pretty far up there and should lower the OC a bit. Throttle means that the card is lowering its clock speed since it detects it is being stress tested. So lower temps and the appearance of stability.
