[CVG]Valve 'not prepared to talk about' Half-Life: Episode 3 - Page 7

i dont want them to dump source! its such a sexy engine!
just update it to support current tech like DX11.
still, the source engine can do some pretty great visuals in L4D2 and even HL2 (even now those graphics are pretty impressive for a game from 2004 and with the cinematic mod its even BETTER)
and its physics is really good. so i expect source will be here for a long time.

valve is focusing on Portal 2 anyway. i'll give it some time. look at DNF and SCII! they took forever to come out but it still did! i just hope it wont take as long as DNF tho :/

They won't dump Source, it's still an excellent engine and there's a huge user base for it.

As for HL2's visuals, don't forget that it now looks better than it did back in 2004. It's got 2007 visuals. When they brought the game to the Mac last year, they also updated the engine with the Orange Box engine which means:

- HDR
- More detailed and better looking character Models from HL2: EP2
- More detailed and better looking weapon Models from HL2: EP2

By now, it's been so heavily modified it's probably far more Valve then iD - but the point is that they've invested hundreds of thousands of man hours into the source engine - to turn around and say 'we're going to start afresh' makes no sense at all - especially since it's always kept fairly current (Orange Box was good for it's time - no ground breaker but still good. Portal 2 also looks decent, graphics wise).
GoldSource was a heavily modified Quakeworld engine. Source was built off of GoldSource.

I think John Carmack has stated however, that he's seen slight traces of old code remaining in Source, but not much. Considering the amount of QuakeC I used to do, I tried to play around with Source and it's a completely different animal.

All in all, I'm disappointed. Not only with the spoiler in this thread, but with Valve's apathy towards letting the consumers in on where they are at. I'm getting tired of hearing "when it's done". I know Valve... and I'm willing to wait, but how about some frigging screenshots after 3 years?

Source is their own development. Sure, might contain bits here and there, but then again, all do. But it's a different thing altogether.
That's not correct, in any way.

At that point we forked off the code in VSS to be both $/Goldsrc and /$Src. Over the next few years, we used these terms internally as "Goldsource" and "Source". At least initially, the Goldsrc branch of code referred to the codebase that was currently released, and Src referred to the next set of more risky technology that we were working on. When it came down to show Half-Life 2 for the first time at E3, it was part of our internal communication to refer to the "Source" engine vs. the "Goldsource" engine, and the name stuck.
Source is just a newer version of GoldSource, containing newer technologies. It's still based on the Quake engine - this is evident in the way that all maps are compiled as BSPs, for one thing. Many modern FPS games are based on iD tech in some way or another - CoD is based on the Quake 3 Arena engine, for example.

That's all relative talking when we get into the percentage realm.

John Carmack said it himself he still spotted traces of the Quake engine there, but not much. Sure, the structure followed may be very similar, but that does not mean the content itself is the same or lookalike. You acknowledge that yourself. Basing something on something else does not mean it's still the same thing intrinsically.

It's the same as saying Sandy Bridge Core i3/5/7 is just a heavily enhanced Pentium Pro.

It's true, but at the same time there's so much new stuff in there, it's got it's own merit.
