Need help/advice with cooling my CPU

Thread Starter
I am switching from an e5200 to a q6600.
I have a cooler master elite 3xx with 2 case fans with blue neon, one in the front, one in the back near the cpu.
My CPU heatsink is an Thermalright heatsink with a 120mm fan.
I have a small ~50mm fan pointing directly beneath my heatsink, throwing cool air to my CPU.

Yesterday I put my q6600 and oced it to 3.6Ghz just for testing purposes. My temps went to 90c and more on load!!! So then I shut down my pc and returned my e5200 for now.
The air flowing in my pc is always cold, so its just the cpu thats the problem.

1)
Is my heatsink and airflow system good enough to handle about 1.5-1.55vcore for a q6600?
Im pretty sure it was because i had only a tiny bit of thermal paste (just the left overs on my CPU and my Heatsink)
Or do I need to upgrade to like water cooling?
Note: I dont want to spend too much money and I need cooling for CPU ONLY.

2)
How big of an impact is thermal paste?

3)
What is a corsair H70?
There is a H50 one for $70 brand new. Worth the upgrade or not??

Any advice and recommendations would be appreciated. Thanks

P.s. I want to achieve speeds of 3.8ghz +++ on my q6600

1. Not sure how good your heatsink is. What're your temps like right now?

2. Can create quite an impact.

3. Meh. I'd find one used if you can. Personally, I just bought the XSPC RASA watercooling kit. Though I did think about buying a H50/H70.

Which ThermalRight HS do you have? Also, try putting some more thermal paste on and try again

You shouldn't want more than 70ishC with that q6600, iirc

Ok,

Well aiming for 3.8 on the 6600 might be a bit excessive. The reason you've jumped so far is you've gone from cooling a dual core to a quad core. Your temps on stock should be just fine.

An h70 is a great upgrade, it's a classed as a sealed loop watercooling system. This means it requires no maintainance and $70 is really good. It costs £70 over here which is knocking close to $100.

I personally wouldnt go for the H70 because I have tried both and have not noticed a difference in temperatures. I would get the H50 if you can find it, it'll cost less and perform pretty much exactly the same. I might have noticed an odd 1-2 degrees max difference on max load with Prime95..for example 70 degrees on h70, and 71 degrees with h50.

1) Cooling isn't the only concern with voltage. I don't know what the stock voltage is but no more +.2 volts above stock.

2) You should ALWAYS use thermal paste on your CPU. I recommend Arctic Silver 5, put a dot on the chip and place the heatsink on top.

3) The H70 is a self contained water cooler. For $70 I would grab it.

And the XSPC RASA kit comes in at 120$. So 20$ for a actual decent WC loop that preforms a little bit better than the H50/H70. Too good to be true

But you need to remember that there is no maintenance required and less risk of leaks etc.
