X5680 - SR-2 - finding stable OC settings :) - Page 2

haha yes I understand it seems rather strange that I have this crazy build while being a total OC noob. I have built systems in the past but have been away from the scene for like 10 years, now I'm back because I set a personal goal to create a great rendering platform for my 3d visualisation business. I spend ages reading threads about the right parts and so on, and now I have the system up and running smile.gif it feels great and I can understand why you guys get so hooked on this ;-)
If 4.4GHZ is what I can expect to get while staying stable then that's ok, but I guess more wants more, and I was told earlier on this board that 4,6-4,8GHZ should be stable with proper watercooling so I trying to see if that's possible, more GHZ means faster rendering smile.gif

Regarding the speed, I spend so much cash on this setup that 3,3GHz wouldn't really impress me at all, I need to get cinebench close to a score of 25 to really get some proper rendering speeds so this system can pay it self off, now that I don't have to spend money on renderfarm cost ;-)

One of my numerous questions for the gurus:

Is it possible to OC the cpu's without changing the memory speed? I don't need the faster memory speed, my modules are Dom GT 2000's and I would like to eliminate any areas that could effect my CPU OC'ing capability smile.gif

you must change the memory speed according to your overclock otherwise the memory will run out of spec. you probably want it closest to it's rated speed unless planning to oc it in order to increase stability.

4.8 GHZ is not something you want for 24/7 usage, the chip will hate you.. and there will be BSOD for sure at some point.

4.4 is perfectly fine

Fair enough smile.gif
What's the most stable way to reach 4.4? Via high blck and low multiplier or the opposite? And what would a good vcore value for this speed? smile.gif

I can't give you the exact numbers right now since my PC is completely naked.. gotta rebuild it tommorow and will check my notepad for the stable settings since I don't have all of them in my head.

I think 4.4ghz is like 1.4v or less (1.35 for 4.3 for sure) its around that.. not sure if that would work on Xeons but it should be the same

I usually use more BLCK but as far as I know multiplier is more stable

4.4 is extremely low for that chip. I run my 920 at 4.2 24/7 with no problem. These are the 980x's xeon counterparts that have no problem running 4.8 all day with no hitches if you have proper cooling. 1.45 volts is as high as i'd go for 24/7 usage. Give it a shot.

Yeah that's what I thought too, but I haven't been able to find some stable settings that work at the higher speeds. I would say I have proper cooling though, 2XXSPC RX480 rads with 12x1450rpm fans.
