Considering that Nimitz-class carriers have two 512 megawatt reactor plants each, 100 kW is a drop in the bucket.

Also the Enterprise will easy be able to power this.

At what range can that laser cut through steel? Not to mention most ship hulls are made out of aluminum nowadays. Not sure how that would affect things.

Incorrect, the new Zumwalt class destroyers have nuclear power and are the ones designed to utilize DEW's.

The technology isn't native to the U.S. if I recall an earlier article. Meaning, it's probably only a matter of funding (given how much technology theft occurs) to create platforms armed with this device.

I would expect since its a laser, it could go on many miles slowly dropping power.

Very slowly

This is legit and all, but real world application of such a defying tech is yet to be seen... I mean, first off this has VERY VERY few practical battle applications as most destroyers engage targets beyond the visible horizon (ergo lasers would require reflectors in orbit to hit targets beyond the visible horizon which would be far too expensive for 99% of the cases ever presented.)

Although this would be siiiiiccckkkk:
1. there is a massive laser on top of the whitehouse
2. If we want to assassinate someone or take out any target all you have to do is enter the GPS coordinates and the system adjusts the reflector's angle
3. zap
4. win

Just remembered that this laser shouldn't have any drop - just remembered something about creating a neutral medium for the impulse to go through.
Derp.

Either way - Imagine a battlefield scenario where you turn on the laser for one second and swipe 180* in front of you. Decapitates every enemy soldier. After all, if it can burn through 20 feet of steel in one second, how hard would it be to make a critical wound through flesh in a tenth of that?
