the airforce has been flying a much more powerful (and bigger) laser for a long time

http://www.airforce-technology.com/projects/abl/

i guess the real news is the advancements in free electron laser (FEL) technology

free electron lasers can be made very small and are highly tunable as opposed to older laser tech.

FEL are sci-fi biznezz

Great read.
Almost correct, but no more battleships...

They probably say many geeky things, but the military will only let "Fire Bank 1! Bank 1 away sir!", be heard...

Correct. For now...

If anything we probably will find these lasers on an aircraft carrier. Aircraft carrier are armed more heavily and have the power for a laser.
Aircraft carriers are NOT more heavily armed. More armed than a PT boat maybe, but not a destroyer, Cruiser or Frigate.

Correct!

I loved it when I was in the Navy. Our ship (DD992 USS Fletcher (now at the bottom of the ocean)), was a test bed for multiple weapons systems including a jammer system that had such a high power output it could burn the paint off of a ship at a 1/4 mile! (Yes I got to witness that first hand).

Also, If they let you see (or even know about) this technology, something better is already under test.

BTW: Concerning power...

Many many years ago when a powerful storm blew through Hawaii, it knocked out all the power to the big island (I am pretty sure it was the big island). US Navy pulls up nuclear powered sub, plugs in and instant power station for the entire island. After the power was restored to the island the Navy ran thorough tests on said reactor and found minimal degradation of the power plant.

Why is no one mentioning aircraft usage? I'm certain that an aircraft could produce the power levels necessary to run the laser, and that's a much more practical usage than mounting it on a carrier! Carriers already have plenty of missile defense systems (AFAIK), so I don't see what good a more powerful one will do.
