Submarines? Sea King helicopters armed with Depth Charges. Now your gonna say lulwut but there is no country where you could contemplate waging war with a single carrier that would have any submarine effective enough to sink a carrier.
A single helicopter, since that's all a Nimitz carries, is going to not only manage to drop sonobuoys, perform radar sweeps, but keep an aircraft carrier, the largest warship ever built, safe from an opposing submersible.

Not to say anything of recent red flag exercises where Diesel submarines were able to go through an entire CBG undetected, but no, that's ludicrous. Besides, an anti-ship torpedo from any modern submarine has much more range than the Mk 46.

Stop trying to point out situational cases where you might possibly be right.
The original argument was why anyone would put the FEL on an aircraft carrier since it is not the aircraft carriers, as a ship, duty, to attack. When it comes to ship-based weapon systems, that is the job of a DESTROYER or CRUISER.

US carriers have "Goalkeeper" CWIS systems, RAMs (rolling airframe missiles; very short range), and long-range SAMs that can hit most aircraft/anti-ship missiles; they also carry Seahawk ASW helicopters (with dipping sonar, sonobouys, and MK-46/MK-50 torpedoes) and S-3 Viking ASW jet aircraft (with sonobouys and the same torpedoes).

The Russian Kuznetsov goes a bit further than that, though it doesn't have dedicated anti-sub jet aircraft on board; long-range SAMs, AK-630 CWIS, and Kortik anti-air gun/missile turrets (which are accurate enough to intercept guided bombs if need be). It also features a rocket-based defense system also present on Kirov battlecruisers designed to divert and destroy torpedoes and UUVs, though the Kuznetsov doesn't exactly have a high-end sonar suite so it comes down to how well they can use that. If they really need to paint a good sonar picture and destroy enemy subs, they can use Helix helicopters.

What long range SAM system does a carrier have?
Already stated they had the CWIS - Not that it'd be effective against that isn't up close and personal.
The S-3 was retired.
Russian carriers don't even have enough money to run patrols.

ANYWHO.
The point was whoever said this system would be mounted on a suppercarrier was an idiot.
Nearly ANY OTHER PART of a Battle Group, but no, not the carrier. [Short of a replacement for the CWIS, in an anti-missile role]

US carriers use ESSMs, or at least they used to and are now using SM-2s; fairly sure a good portion still use ESSMs. Admiral Kuznetsov employs the SA-N-9 "Gauntlet", and uses 4 clusters of vertical launch tubes rather than turrets like US carriers. Both are relatively long range missiles, though neither is as capable as the SM-3 that some of our cruisers now use (capable of sub-orbital ballistic interception).

Mount it on a carrier? I don't see why not. Usually the President sends an aircraft carrier with-in striking range to a country that is behaving bad. Slap on a big bad laser and let the enemy know about it, the enemy may think twice about getting crazy.

Also in the article, on the left, it says battleships of the future will be equipped with that laser. Battleships equal aircraft carrier. So, I think it's safe to say aircraft carriers could get this super laser.

I seem to recall some support ship nearby or somewhat off in the distance while I was in the hanger bays. I also remember something about subs never being too far away from the carrier either.
