Considering a switch to intel, specifically the i7-2600k

Up front, I'll say I don't know anything about intel cpu's or systems really. I believe the terminology is all different. But I'm just fed up with amd. They are great for the money spent, but I had a 1090t for about two days, and I was very unimpressed with the results.

I would be doing a lot of encoding/transcoding video, so I would like the fastest possible. I know for my realworld experience, benchmarks meant nothing. All benchmark show the 1090 being way faster than my current 945, yet when it came to encoding a movie(2pass 720p divx hd), I gained about 3 minutes. It could be accurate, but for $200, not worth it IMO.

Ive been thinking about selling my board/CPU and stepping up to an i7. What are my best options in the $250-300 range? I wanted the 2600k, but a friend of mine said something about the 1155 mobo's being recalled.

The boards were recalled due to faulty 3gb sata ports. It's still up in the air as to if the problem will ever surface on our end, but Intel did some heavy duty benching and identified the problem after the boards shipped. Right now, best guess is mid March to April time frame before the new improved boards ship.

You can wait til then, or check out the for sale section on the forums here (or else where). People occasionally put up the "defective" boards for sale. You can still get the i7 2600k, it's just the boards that are hard to find (aka you have to buy a used board right now).

I upgraded to one of the "defective" boards as I am under the school of thought that the problem will never be seen on my end. Plus, I have a c300 which uses the 6gb sata port, so the only thing on my 3gb sata port is my optical drive.

Do it! Do it right now! Just kidding...do it when the fixed P67 chipset motherboards arrive in march-april. Sandy bridge is an amazingly fast and efficient platform. You will not miss the AMD system.

Take a look at the bliss performance of sandy bridge here:

The 2600K will run circles around the 1090T

Some AMD guys will say the following benchmarks aren't reliable, but real world users have shown these to be pretty accurate, and if you can run your own tests, keep your scores, and when you get yourself a 2600K, you can report back wink.gif

http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/287?vs=203

Be sure to note where it says, lower is better, higher is better...

Those results just make me want to upgrade now. If I didn't want to wait for the new boards, what 1156 cpu's are on par with the 2600?

an overclocked i7-8xx may be able to keep up with a stock 2600k, but not worth it. wait for the 2600

Not hardly. You can overclock a 2600k to 5ghz HT on 24/7 stable with aircooling. Try and do that with a i7-8xx and it would catch fire.

Does the program you use even support 6 cores? If your die hard set on Intel, wait for the refreshed boards and get a 2600K. Make sure there's a "K" in there lol.

Besides better power consumption what is the real advantage of upgrading right now? I'd wait for Bulldozer if I was you.

I am also on the waiting list... I hate it because I have the 2600k collecting dust while waiting for the new motherboards to be on sale_ Its a pain in the butt especially with all this hardware sitting around with no motherboard to run it...

Its a huge test of patience for me_
