About to buy a new GPU. Stuck between green or red...

Thread Starter
Looking for a new GPU. The GTX 460 just isn't cutting it for me. I don't really want to do any crossfire or SLi stuff (yet).

I'm looking into either the GTX 570 or the HD 6970. I know right, we've all heard these threads before (SORRY!).

I don't need 3D. Yeah it's kind of cool, and I plan on buying a 120hz monitor in the future (for clearer gaming). But I don't need it, it makes my heard sore after a while too.

Prices are essentially the same. Running my monitor and games at 1920x1080. Overclocking and water cooling is definitely a possibility.

Which card is right for me?

Danke.

What are you planning on doing with your 460?

If you're going to be keeping the 460 then go with the 6970, use the 460 as a dedicated Physx card and you'll be laughing. Only reason I got the 570 was for physx.

If you have no problems with Nvidia, why not stick with them?
I'd rather not switch to the other side and have to deal with driver problems.
Though I would recommend a 6950 that you can unlock into a 6970.
No need to pay more if you don't have to.

However, once again, Unlocking increases temps and can even be unstable at stock clocks, let alone overclocking once unlocking.

There is a thread on here somewhere that shows that the 6950 unlock only adds 2-3% to frame rates, look on it as an extra to your overclock, the extra isn't as much as a real 6970 would give.
The 570 is about the same power as the 480, it's a major upgrade from where you are.

While it does increase temps, I don't see how they'd go higher than the 6970 (if we're talking about an overclocked 6950). Cooler size/design may play a factor, but you can always increase fan speed or go under water. The 6950 flashed as a 6970 is one of the greatest deals currently. Though if you're looking squarely at a 6970/570, I'd say 6970. It's a little faster in several games.

I actually have had some bad experiences with Nvidia drivers. A lot of times my PC wouldn't boot, would crash when it got into windows, or would just crash when loading programs, all because of a poor Nvidia driver. I'm not saying I'm completely against Nvidia but I haven't had problems with either side really.

I don't use physx at all TBH. There's no really GOOD games that I'd like to play that have it. So it isn't needed.

I was in the same situation as you a few weeks ago. I decided on the 570 because I wanted to get back into folding and I'm tired of getting the runaround on a decent ATI F@H client. I grabbed the Gigabyte with the non-reference cooler because newegg was out of EVGA SC editions when I ordered. I played around with the OC, landed 900/1800/2000 @1.038v, and I haven't looked back. This thing laughs at every game I throw at it and asks for seconds, then goes on to crank out 18k+ PPD on F@H when I'm not gaming.

At the resolution you are playing at, a 570 is probably the right answer. It will beat the 6970 at that resolution. Now if your thinking about a multi monitor setup, or just a better resolution monitor, then go the 6950 and unlock it. It doesn't increase temps when you unlock that's misleading. The temperature increase is because of the extra hardware your now using and the higher clock. The 2-3% increase mentioned above is a chart given by a gentleman here on OCN at 1920 X 1080. Not too surprising he didn't see that much of an increase I suppose as I believe all he did was unlock the shaders and bump the voltage with a minor overclock.

Feel free to unlock the 6950 and overclock. Your mileage will vary of course and it's no guarantee, but far more people are successfully running at a 6970 setting with a 6950 than are not. It's a gamble of course, but if you weren't willing to take it then you wouldn't be thinking about overclocking your CPU either. My 6950's are flashed to 6970 bios, and running at 950/1450 all day. That includes Crysis benchies not just Furmark.

tl;dr go for the 570 with current setup. getting better monitors or more than one? go 6950 and flash and overclock em.
