I want open and closed at the same time!

Thread Starter
I tried making sense of the Hi-Fi.org forums, but unfortunately I left audio on one of the last things on the list and I'm about all researched out. 20+ page forum topics were awesome a month ago, now they are just exhausting.

Overclock.net, you have never ceased to amaze me, please help me again!

But from what I have read:

I've got the sound card narrowed down to the Asus Xonar Essence STX or the HT Omega Claro Halo. Pretty much the same card except the interface they plug into, I've heard more people leaning towards the Asus. I mainly want these for the amp, as the last thing I want is to buy a pair of headphones that aren't reaching their full potential. But I also don't want to buy or have an amp. >.<

This will be for gaming, movies, and music. Not in any particular order.

Closed keep sound out and have better bass. Well I listen to dubstep and thrive on bass.
Open have a better soundstage, I'm an avid gamer, this sounds like something I'd want.

What headphones, paired with the sound card above, will allow me to have all the things I want without too much compromise or money? Durability is important, portability is not. Audio cords seem to deteriorate whenever I am near, so a detachable/replaceable cord would be preferred.

Some I've looked at:
ATH-A700-AD700-A900-AD900
AKG-70#'s (about as high budget as I'll go and would prefer not to)
Senn HD555, 585, 595

I've looked at more, but at this point my brain is full.

If you get the hd555s, foam mod them. I love my foam modded 555s.
First off, I have not tried the Essence STX but I ahve had an XtremeGamer, Forte 7.1, and my current Omega Halo and the Halo far and away is the best of those. I know you would think so from price but the drivers are cleaner, the outputs are better for me, etc. Great card.

As for headphones, why not pick up a pair of each? If you are willing to pay for a pair of AKGs, getting both the A700s and AD700s or HD555s seems like a good choice. I really want to try a pair of open headphones myself (currently have the A700s) but I need them to be closed at times for late nights and noisy rooms.

I actually agree with the above statement saying to pick up a pair of each. Two good pairs, one closed and one open, are NOT redundant. A compromise is just that, settling for something to slightly fit both purposes.

Buy a higher quality set of headphones rather than multiple sets. For a good mix of open and closed I would look at the dt880 or dt990 lines by Beyerdynamic.

If anything I would save my money and buy something worth while rather than sinking money into something that isnt going to give you the performance you are looking for.

From my experience I'd say go for the closed ones.

I certainly won't be going for two sets of cans, I'm splurging as it is, one set for a bit more than a pair of open & closed of lesser value is about as far as I can take it.

Does anyone know where I can go to listen and try on some of these models? I'm in Northern VA and have no idea about the music/studio industry.

I am leaning towards closed as I like the bass and like the idea of less environment interference as long as the soundstage is still ok for gaming. Any suggestions for closed headphones in the ~$150-250 range that pair nicely with either of the sound cards that have the amp?

I agree that you will likely end up with two pairs of cans, however; your best bet would be to get one good pair of cans and see if they for all your needs. If not then you can look for a second pair.

Open vs closed, in terms of gaming soundstage, isn't really that big a deal unless you are a professional gamer. If you are willing to spend the money, I'd take wounding's advice and get a pair of AKG or Beyerdynamics. You won't regret it.
