Upgrade Recommendations

So, I'll be getting my tax return this week and I'm considering an upgrade (or a few small ones) to my sig rig. $200 is the maximum budget for this upgrade. The only problem is that I'm not sure what I want to get! Therefore, I'm looking for ideas as to where to go next. Any ideas are appreciated. Specs on the sig rig are current.

A few notes: This is a gaming machine, as well as being used for everything else one would do on a computer. Also, I currently have a micro-atx motherboard in my new case, which supports standard ATX. (previous case was a TT Lanbox, thus the MATX mobo)

The motherboard in this rig (since its not specified in the sig) is an ASUS M4-A78EM and my Phenom is socket AM2+.

Any ideas (especially well-supported ones!) are appreciated. Thanks guys smile.gif

BD should be hitting shelves in April or so.

Suggestion: Maybe another hard drive as I am kind of weary having my boot drive being 1TB or larger (Once that is gone, everything is). Possibly a 500GB for boot and a nice amount of your files for some security if anything were to happen.

Also a +1 for a new CPU cooler. OC your CPU up a bit so you can get a bit of life out of it. tongue.gif

I'm probably going to get an SSD for my birthday which will become my new boot drive, but I may also pick up a 2TB drive for backup/more data storage.

As far as the CPU goes, the the 920 is at 3.3ghz right now on the stock cooler...its not a black edition, do you think that extra cooling will really help? I'm not sure how much further it will go even if I push the voltage a bit further.

The extra cooling will help out quite a bit. It will keep your temps under check so if you get unstable, it maybe your CPU hitting a wall.

Also, if you ever happen to move onto BD or something, you might still be able to use the cooler and then you can OC that sucker on day 1. smile.gif

Edit: If you want to CFX your 4890, that would be a great idea also. Your Power Supply allows this so you will see a nice bump up in frames.

yeah, new cooler and overclock, recommend zalman performa (that's why i have it too:))
you do hava matx mbo and it probably ain't the best of the overclockers, but try for the best you can, no point in getting new motherboard now with new socket soon to be in use.

also another thing you could get is a faster hard drive, you have wd green which is eco friendly and power saver

other than that you re fine, your gpu is fine for the res you are playing, your monitor is fine, 8gb ddr great, all good

so cooler and overclock and new hard drive or a small ssd

It's a Caviar Black, actually. Performance-oriented. Green < Blue < Black.
But anyways, any ideas for a CPU cooler? I haven't had aftermarket cooling in QUITE some time so I'm a bit behind on which coolers are the best. As a side note, I'm really hoping that AMD keeps the same latch mechanism for their CPU coolers when they move to AM3+....

If you want to spend the money for the best air cooling available, get the Thermalright Silver Arrow or the Noctua D-14. Thermalright Archon is good as well if you have high-profile RAM and need more clearance.
For air cooling on a budget, pick up the Cooler Master Hyper 212 Plus.

you changed that from caviar green to caviar black right now just to make me look stupid, admit it:)

if you want top cooling and can spend quite a few bucks on it than it depends on few things
but i would get noctua nh-d14
keep in mind it is huge, but cool (and cool:)) and quiet
check out the offical noctua nh-d14 club
