Swapped from DVI to HDMI and now I have black borders! - Page 2

There is a logical explanation:
Your graphics card (+driver) reads the EDID from your monitor and decides that it is a HDTV. Whether it is the inability of the driver to read properly or the fault of the monitor sending the info wrong, I do not know.

Coupled with the fact that you are using HDMI (usually connected with HDTV), the driver decides to underscan because many HDTVs would overscan by default. At the end, you are seeing a smaller image on your monitor, leaving black borders around.

That happened to me as well on my HD5850, HD5970, and HD6970.

Just change underscan to 0% and you're good to go

The important thing to remember: fix the problem where it occurs.

If overscanning/underscanning happens, it is important to determine the root cause. Is it caused by the card or by the HDTV/monitor?

Eg If overscanning is caused by a HDTV, the preferred solution is to turn off the Overscan feature of the HDTV rather than to use the Underscan feature of the card.

No black borders!

I am using a 32'' Lg tv LH300 and the quality is superb. Using HDMI - Amd 11.2 drivers.

CCC - properties digital flat/ image scaling = scale image to full panel size.
Overscan 0%

Dont buy expensive HDMI cables, its a con!

It should be set to 0% in catalyst anyways. Anything else will distort the image

If the image with 0% goes off the screen, you gotta fiddle with the monitor.

Plus with HDMI, you get all kinds of different displays that scale differently. Not just LCDs, you've got Plasmas, DLPs, omg... HDTV tube CRTs!@#!!!

Often you can't disable the under/overscan of a TV, or even adjust it.

Thank God you have under/overscan feature on yer vid card driver right?

Yes. I am going all hdmi from here forward. Tiger sells refurb gateway 23" HD monitors that have hdmi, dvi,rgb + audio in. So I bought 4 of them for work. Plus, nothing is more awesome than plugging a laptop into an hdtv to watch videos, etc.

Anyhow, the gateways are pretty effin good for $139 (and come with cables), but my several year old 42" Sony LCD is amazing. I recently got a cheap-o 42" lcd-tft-something HDTV for work and it's noticeably fuzzier than the gateways and the sony. Further, the sony does 1920 (and the Gateways) but the cheapy tv has to go one setting below, which it then overscans to make it look like 1920. Kinda lame, but I got it so we can watch webinars and take on the road for trade shows...

So yeah all monitors are going to treat hdmi differently. Chris

Wow, my HDMI is really tripping balls. In the BIOS, when booting, when no drivers are installed the entire screen is tinted green! My IPS connected via DVI is absolutely fine, but the HDMI monitor is really green. Once I install drivers, it is fine. But strange :/

Yeah... mine blanks until well into boot up. When I want in the bios, I bang on the DEL key for a while then it'll come in. Probably is more the monitor than the GPU hardware.
