The AMD Quad Laptop will cost about $560 after tax. If possible, I'd like to buy something <$600 on Amazon where I don't have to pay tax. (Woot no tax on Amazon! )

Slow Quad, Fast Graphics, Good Screen
16.0" Toshiba (Actually 16", not 17.3")
Phenom II P920 1.6Ghz Quad Core
ATI Radeon HD 5650 AND HD 4200 for switchable graphics
500GB 5400RPM
~$560 after tax

Amazon.com: Acer AS5552G-7632 15.6-Inch Laptop (Mesh Black): Electronics < Currently leaning towards this laptop
Fast Dual, Fast Graphics, Good Screen
15.6" Acer
Phenom II N660 3Ghz Dual Core
ATI Radeon 6650
500GB 5400RPM
$580

Amazon.com: Acer AS5742G-6846 15.6-Inch Laptop (Mesh Black): Computer & Accessories
Fast Dual, Fast Graphics, Good Screen
15.6" Acer
Intel Core i3 380M 2.53Ghz Dual Core
Nvidia GT 540M 1GB DDR3
640GB 5400RPM
$650

Do those two new laptops look like they'd perform similarly, but one is a good bit cheaper. I'm not good with laptop specs. Had to check Notebookcheck so many times. Only other major difference besides those listed is that the Acers have terrible speakers while Toshiba has great stereo speakers and backlit keyboard over the Acers.

Thanks OCN for the help so far! I really appreciate it!

Any recommendations appreciated!

Looking for something 14" to 16" tops. Will be mostly for school with light gaming on the side (SC2 only and flash games afaik). Would also like to have a good processor. I want to say the budget is ~$550 or less. Lower the better. I'm open to used, refurbs, open box, recertified, whatever. Willing to spend a little more or have a bigger screen size if it has good specs.

Ignore the four laptop specs list below

Out of these 4 that I've found so far, which is the best to suit my needs(?):

Slow Quad, Fast Graphics, Big Screen
16.0" Toshiba (Actually 16", not 17.3")
Phenom II P920 1.6Ghz Quad Core
ATI Radeon HD 5650 AND HD 4200 for switchable graphics
320GB 5400RPM
~$510

Good Triple Core, ATI Integrated Graphics, Good Screen Size
15.6" Toshiba
Phenom II N850 2.2Ghz Triple Core
ATI Radeon HD 4250
320GB 5400RPM
~$410 or $450

Fast Dual Core, ATI Integrated Graphics, Big Screen
17.3" Acer
Phenom II N640 2.9Ghz Dual Core
ATI Radeon HD 4250
500GB 5400RPM
~$410 or $470

Fast Dual Core, Intel Integrated Graphics, Good Screen Size
15.6" Toshiba
Intel Core i3 370M 2.4Ghz Dual Core
Intel HD Graphics
500GB 7200RPM
~$450

I know some of you that see the laptops will go, "But Rpg, those are obviously 17.3" Laptops". I MIGHT be willing to deal with the bigger screen size in return for higher performance (to a certain point).

The AMD Quad laptop looks good, but 1.6Ghz core speed is very slow and had a giant screen. AMD Dual core laptop is very fast, but screen size and integrated graphics.

I think you should go with this one-

Good Triple Core, ATI Integrated Graphics, Good Screen Size
15.6" Toshiba
Phenom II N850 2.2Ghz Triple Core
ATI Radeon HD 4250
320GB 5400RPM
~$410 or $450

If you go used etc i think you can probably pick up quite a sweet laptop,
the dell precision and xps might be worth a look (although xps has gone downhill a lot) the precisions are very good and you could get a pretty good one for you budget.

Agree with SKI. Also, remember that "upgrading" to a 17.3 will cause a reduction in battery life.

Better than the Intel Laptop I posted? It's basically down to processor, ATI integrated vs Intel integrated, and 7200 RPM vs 5400 RPM hard drive.

Would I see much difference from 5400 to 7200 RPM hard drives?

Slow quad. You should be able to play SC2 at reasonable frame rates. Do not get the Intel HD graphics, they are horrid.

For around $450!?! I expect most Sandy Bridge laptops to be around $550-600.

Only seems good if everything was multi-threaded. Graphics is killer though (in a good way). If the Proc was the triple or either of the dual cores I listed, I'd be all over it.... but 1.6Ghz just seems way too slow, especially for single threaded apps or games.

Is there any way to disable half the cores on a laptop quad and run it like a dual core from the BIOS?

Interesting.... I'm surprised the low clock speed aren't deterring any of you guys from recommending it.

2 for the Quad core
2 for the Triple core
0 for the AMD Dual core
0 for the Intel Dual core

More vote the better. Or links to other similar laptops would be great too! +rep to you guys.
