Anyhow if anyone else installed that hotfix let me know if it's doable.
Kind of off-topic but:

As an update to my previous post in this thread (which was a bit of a rant and I apologize)... I was able to successfully install SP1 last night but it was a complete pain. I began the Windows 7 install recovery process while at work (remote connection to home PC) and when it got to the point where files were being uncompressed, my connection terminated. When I got home my PC was sitting at a screen asking me for my product key. Entered it and continued through the install recovery and once finished, I got a message that I might be the victim of software counterfeiting. I had to do a phone activation for my product key and everything was back to normal.

At this point I ran the SP1 install package that I downloaded once more and it successfully installed. The only issue I had after running the install recovery was Alcohol 52% no longer worked. I reinstalled and all is well.

Glad you got it sorted out.

I'm really curious as to why so many people have had problems installing this service pack. The only thing I can think of is that their Windows installation somehow became corrupt at some point. The installation on all of my computers went seamlessly.

Yes well I finally got SP1 installed, but....now the computer will NOT turn off.
It goes through the normal shutdown screens, then shuts off the monitor, but it does NOT power off the computer.
Found this out this morning when I came into my office and saw that it was running.
I have to push my power button until the comp shuts off.
I tried it many times just to be sure.
Bootup is slower now also. About ready to uninstall SP1.

Edit; It was that crap NET 4 that was causing the SP1 install problem.

I'm not really sure why I had to go through all of that. I try to keep my computer as clean as possible and always run updates as soon as they are available through Windows Update. Oh well..... at least it worked in the end.

@ Mr_Torch - I wonder if having Linux installed is somehow a cause for your installation, boot, and shutdown issues.

So what exactly does the service pack install/do that hasn't already been updated? I mean, isn't the SP1 just a compendium of updates to date compiled into a service pack for easy installation to new installs?

I have noticed nothing - not a damn thing - different other than my installation (obviously) saying 'Windows 7 Professional - Service Pack 1'....

I'm having a bit of trouble getting this SP to install. From the logs produced by the System Update Readiness Tool it seems like a bunch of ATI files are to blame (go figure). I just stumbled across a thread that might explain the problem:

http://forum.phyxion.net/viewtopic.php?id=17&p=1

It seems that using Driver Sweeper to clean old ATI drivers inadvertently removes some files that windows is looking for which stops SP1 from installing. I still haven't gotten it to install after getting 3 different error codes but I think it is just a matter of getting all of the old ATI driver files it is looking for into the right location.

Nope, at the time it did not have Linux installed.
I knew that might cause a problem so I removed Linux from the system.
I uninstalled SP1 and the issues it caused remained.
So I used an Acronis image I had, and now all is fine. SP1 is now under my hidden update section. I won't install that garbage again, it caused problems, not fixed anything.(Really wasn't having any problems)
But thanks for the thought.
It is all running now just as it always did. Runs good and fast.
