good & bad news-i7 2600 k degraded - Page 2

What I have found through testing when overclocking is, if you go too high you will essentially degrade the performance of your components (CPU / MB)...

I have been having serious issues getting the same results I had before will all the same settings I used originally, and this lends proof that if you stress too hard you will damage your components..

I'm going to try to find the most stable overclock and just leave it there forever...

PEBCAK, smaller manufacturing processes get more and more fragile to voltage. Sucks that you messed up your chip but that was WAYYYYYYYY to much voltage, even for 45nm chips.

I don't think they've been in user's hands long enough to make this determination.

Degredation doesn't necessarily happen overnight.

No offense to your (awesome) CPU, but it's not quite almost identical performance.. 5ghz is quite a leap from 4 for many tasks.
Why upgrade?

mine's been at 1.45-1.5v for over a month, so far so good

Nope, but the ES's have and SIN ran his several Sandybridge CPU's at 1.5v for months and months.

I think it's pretty clear he's been trying to degrade the chip...

People derping need to look in the mirror.

He ran high voltage and high temps just to see how fast and how badly it would degrade.

Thanks for the insight OP, at least we know we can't do what you did

Ok well i've experienced a different kinda degregation. My 2600K has taken some slight spike abuse initially until I turned all the LLC and VRM boost crap off and got stable fixed volts. The last 3 weeks i've used for gaming quite alot and prime tested my overclock too inititially for 1 hour and settled with 4.8Ghz @ 1.44v Now it still rocks at 4.8Ghz i've not noticed any high end degrading as such yet but I did start getting what i thought were random blue screens. It turns out that in the EPU settings the vcore downgrade option no longer functions correctly. The cpu is unstable in its undervolted state and causes blue screen. Disabling the vcore downgrade stops the blue screens at desktop while low powering it. Often id finish a game and set it back to power save and it would crash. This makes sense tho on my 955 black edition before i overclocked past 3.6Ghz my undervolt at 800Mhz was prime stable at 0.725v but after a few weeks at 4Ghz 1.525v the 800Mhz was only prime stable at 0.95v. I think if you care about low volt performance and powersaving you need to bear that in mind when overclocking these chips. Although mine still works at 4.8Ghz i'm going to send it back to the shop and get a replacement and not go over 1.3v. I want my cpu to be undegraded at low end. I think we are just going to have to face it that chips are getting more sensitive as they get smaller and just coz the vid lets you go that high it does not mean by any means the chip can handle it without risking serious degrades either at low or high end.

Herp Derp how could anything else happen? I had no idea. I thought unicorns would explode out of the mother board and a "the more you know" rainbow would float across the room if anyone put that much voltage on one on air.
