new psu for older computer

Hi ocn,

I’m installing my old Pentium3 board in my lancool case
The original psu mainboard connector isn’t long enough

fig 1

I’ve got another psu that is long enough but is newer and was used on my 939 board. I wanted to know if it will be safe to use the newer psu with the old board.

Here are pics of the ratings on the old psu

fig 2

And the new one

fig 3

I know I could get a mainboard extender but I’m strapped for cash at the moment

I read this on Phaedrus2129 guide

This is what Im concerned about, half the system is from 1999.
Will the newer psu with 0.3A -12V rail be enough for considering the old psu had 0.8A -12v?

Your thoughts please ocn

Nope nope. Not always true. Don't make a generalization like that. Just because a specific case works doesn't mean it always will.

The HEC is pretty crappy. I wouldn't use it in a modern system. However, that works in your favor. Since the HEC is based on a modification of a Pentium III era design, turns out it has a high +5V and +3.3V rating, which is what you need to run a Pentium 3 system. I don't know if HEC tweaked the voltage regulation to tip it more toward +12V oriented rigs, but it should still stay in spec with a +5V/+3.3V crossload.

Thanks for your input, I'll go ahead and use it.

This, Trust me, listen to this guy, he is 1 of the very few of the people that actually know what they're talking about when it comes to power supplys.

Jameco was the only store that carried those and they don't anymore. Tator got a couple of those before they disappeared, maybe he has a spare.

Of you could just get a 20pin or a 20 to 24pin extension.
