Help me pick a GPU

Thread Starter
I am planning on buying my brother a gaming rig for his birthday, which is in April. I need a GPU that will be able to play SC2, Diablo 3, Crysis, Battlefield 3, and a few other games.

A solid 30 FPS max settings @ 1920x1080 would be nice. Its going to be paired with a quadcore phenom, and 4gb of ddr3 1333..

I would like this card to survive in the gaming world for for atleast a year or two.

Thanks

P.S I don't need to purchase until April 15th. So please try and keep the card at lowest cost possible, with consideration of price drops.

Hmmm if you're trying to make it future proof then I would go with the 580. Its a big purchase to swallow but it'll max anything game at 1080p with ease. If that's a little too much then I'd say get the 570 as its significantly cheaper and yields ~80% the performance of the 580.

Way to powerful, not really what I was thinking.

How about a GTX 460, what do you guys think? I want it to be able to max games from now until next year. After that lowering settings would be understandable. Im looking to spend around 150.

This. A 580 will be mid-range in two years. My GTX 285 was king in 2009. Two years later it's mid to low-end.

Yeah thats out of my range right now. I was looking to spend around 150.. I think I hit the hammer on the nail with that GTX 460.. I have one right now, and I am highly satisfied.

His is going to be 12 years old.. I think anything will satisfy him at this point. He is trying to game on a little laptop and he plays sc2 lowest settings with like 10 fps lol

I'd probably go for the GTX 570 or 560, pretty good bang for the buck.

Anything less than a 570/470 isn't going to max current games. It takes my 285s in SLI to max BFBC2, its noticeably slower on one card, and a little over a year ago they were the best single-gpu nvidia cards you could buy.

Edit: Just saw the 30FPS remark, in that case you could still get a lower end gpu, but to have it last more than a year would be asking a lot I think.

The 460 is good now and is cheap. Plus you'd get two free games

Well, I have a GTX 460.. and if I can game great with it, my brother will so I will go with that. GPU can be upgraded easier than anything else anyways.

Not to mention he will be at 1440x900 until he buys a new monitor, mentioning 1920x1080 was just a buffer, as he will probably get a new one when he has this computer anyways.
