How many builds have you done, still using any "first build" parts?

Thread Starter
Hi all;

I am planning my first project out and have been suffering through some sticker shock (once I finalize my new case, I will post my shopping list). My concern (besides selling this to not-interested-in-shiney-computer-parts hubby, however I believe in the "easier to ask forgiveness" mantra), is making this investment and either losing interest due to maintenance, or buying all new parts for each subsequent upgrade, which is unaffordable (and unsellable to the afore mentioned hubby).

1. I like to think that if I buy quality parts right off the bat, I can reuse them over and over, just buying new waterblocks and tube, maybe fans. Do you multi-build guys find that to be true?

2. How many builds/rebuilds have you done? Any parts still in use from your original build? What's your oldest parts?

3. How often do you do maintenance on your loop solely for maintenance sake (ie; because you have to), and not for adding parts or rearranging stuff?

Thanks for your responses - itchy trigger finger is itchy

1. Yes. Radiators last for EVER if you treat them nicely. A quality pump can last 4-6 year easily. Waterblocks usually only last 2-3 years before they don't fit the new CPU socket. Tubing is so cheap it really doesn't matter. Fittings also last forever.

2. 3. Bought all of my parts aug. 2010, been adding stuff ever since.

3. None at all. No need for maintenance once you have setup the loop.

1. I don't see why you can't recycle old parts. But if you're doing a new build you likely won't be able to reuse main components
2. 1
3. I think it is recommended once per one/two month(s).

Im still on my first build, and its becoming an HTPC/fileserver. I would say that quite a few people do small upgrades to keep their sigs current. I did in the storage and RAM categories.

Edit: Not all that relevant to H2O cooling however.

Only thing in my case left that's from an old build is (half? - it has a new top) the pump and that's only 2 builds old, though coming up on 3 years old.

I've not regretted changing anything else in my loop however, it may be time to get a new pump but so far I can't see it would make much of a difference.

1 you can reuse them over time. The higher the quality the longer they will last and stay pretty if cared for properly.
2 I've done 4 major rebuilds and have reused a ton of parts. Fittings I've found are what last the longest without needing to be replaced. My mobo and mosfet waterblocks have been on 3 boards and work wonders as well as look awesome.
3 I don't maintain the loop unless I'm adding new blocks or components, which really always ends up in redoing the entire loop in order to set it up better.

I plan to reuse most of my loop parts for subsequent builds. I got a universal gpu block instead of full-cover specifically so that I could upgrade gpu's and reuse if need be.

So, umm, "come on in, the water's fine" :-)

Seriously, thanks - I was pretty confident about the reusability, and the value of investing in the good stuff. Now waiting to find out if Directron has the love-it-or-hate-it Silverstone TJ 11 in stock for my build. Backup case is the LiLi V2120.

My 1-gallon glass pickle jar RES has been reused in many loops since I started WCing in 1999.

My MCP350 has many years tacked onto it.

Like CharlieHorse says, RADs can last very long. I have a few that can be added in a quick moment that were on other loops.
