Ftdisk.Sys error during XP setup

Hi. A friend of mine has an XP machine. Recently his xp(partition C) got corrupted due to some reason. Instead of repairing it, he installed it in a new partition(D). Then, He booted into ubuntu using live cd and formatted the C partition. The XP in D partition used to work properly. Then, he formatted even that partition to do a completely clean install. After formatting D, he is not able to install XP as he has started to get the message "ftdisk.sys missing" or something similar to that. He erased the entire hard drive using seatools and killdisk and he still gets the same message. He tried my win 7 disc. Windows 7 disc isn't even going to setup. The dvd rom drive is scanned for a few seconds and it goes to hard drive and shows "Select proper boot device" or something like that as the hard drive is blank. What could be the problem here? What could be the reason behind ftdisk.sys missing error? Why isn't any windows os getting installed? Please help. Thanks in advance..

When your friend formatted the "C" drive he deleted the boot sector.
It doesn't matter where you "put" an OS, the C Drive always gets the boot sector.

Best would to FDisk the drive.

Of course, first pull off any files you want to save.

Thanks. I'll ask him to try that. But erasing the entire drive using seatools and then installing OS shouldn't cause any problem right?

Seatools, not familiar with it. Does it erase or overwrite?

It's Seagate's tool for hard drive diagnostics. It has an option to erase the entire drive...

Then you'll have to Fdisk it, make partitions (but you an do that later), set at least one partition as the primary partition and make that partition the active partition.

Then an OS install program has somewhere to put the boot sector (always the first sector of the primary, active partition)

Note that Win7 (and Vista) use a completely different file structure than the (DOS based) Win XP does. So even if you could load XP, previous Win7/Vista installs would not be bootable any more.

Thanks a lot for your help Bill. He finally got to solve his problem. He created a primary FAT32 partition using ubuntu 10.10. Then, he installed the memory stick in the other slot. Then XP setup went on without any problem. Don't know what the problem was exactly. May be the memory stick or slot had a problem too. But he still can't install Windows 7 as the disc isn't recognised as an OS disc. Has that got something to do with the older BIOS of the motherboard?

It may be that the optical drive can't read the install disk. Many older drives need a firmware update in order to work with Win7.

But then it could be a BIOS issue also.

His optical drive had recognized windows 7 beta when he had his old motherboard which died 6 months ago. So, it's a bios issue then. Thanks again.
